  1. ” European Groups Expose ‘Terrifying Extent of Corporate Grab’ Within TTIP

‘The ability to enact effective and fair tax systems to finance vital public services is one of the defining features of sovereignty,’ says Global Justice Now—one that is threatened by corporate trade deals ”
This applies to the TPPA as well.

” “The evidence of the dangers of these investment deals continues to mount. Not only do they affect health and the environment and cost taxpayers millions in legal fees…they also affect the ability of governments to tax corporations effectively.” ”
    —Cecilia Olivet, Transnational Institute

    Comment:

It can’t be over-emphasized that this, as bad as it is, is just about the tax portion of these “trade deals.” This doesn’t even count such other aberrations as the ability to sue for the loss of “expected profits.”

The power grab here is of seismic proportions. Hard to believe, actually.

  2. What an excellent exposition Nadia. I totally agree with all you say. Thank you for saying it so forcefully and well for us.

  3. I protested on Queen St that day. I am an ordinary kiwi of Pakeha and Maori descent from a middle class family with very middle class jobs – I’m a teacher, my mum’s a nurse, my dad’s a truck driver, my brother is an electrician and his wife is a rep for a large pharmaceutical company. The TPPA impacts on each and everyone of us. I am an ordinary kiwi who does not want our sovereignty eroded, our health and education systems undermined, our dairy farmers still hobbled in the US, Canadian and Japanese markets and numerous other issues such as copyright.

  4. One of the best posts I have read in a long time. No doubt eloquence was edited out of the protestors’ comments shown on the news… Please keep writing posts like this one.

  5. [ ‘ The experiences of people not doing so well in Aotearoa are widespread, discontent is an inch beneath the surface. Hopefully soon we’ll stop being called stupid and start being called dangerous. ‘ ]

    …………………………………………………………………………………………..

    Excellent. Pure excellence.

The above statement encapsulates all that is the power of democracy and open disclosure.

Because in a healthy democracy … the people ARE DANGEROUS.

Not to each other but to any group, individual or subversive who dares to denigrate that democracy. And whats more – we have every right to exert that power.

And that includes subversive neo liberals like John Key. I notice however as of late , that one of the tools we have at our disposal is that of derisive mockery … which has its place after such an event as the TTPA demonstrations.

Derisive mockery can only be used after there is an informed public and a groundswell of public sentiment. I refer of course to the Dildo incident at Waitangi and the Glitterbombing and booing at both the Nines rugby league and the Big Gay Out.

Nevertheless… the warranted humiliation and derision directed at these anti democratic politicians backed by their big business corporations is well earned. It makes it just that bit harder for them to be taken seriously at home and abroad.

And also highlights the very reasons and motives to just why they earned that derision.

Indeed… that old cliche about ‘ power to the people ‘ is brought back to life every time the public awakes , mobilizes and starts to exert their political muscle. And if we had leaders who truly fulfilled their obligations as elected officials to direct their energy’s towards the betterment of the people who elected them then they would not have to endure that derision and humiliation in the first place.

    Excellent article.

And it is time we as a people rediscover the tools that can force these arrogant and subversive neo liberal wretches soundly and decisively onto the back foot.

  6. Under this Government a majority of New Zealanders have become enemies of the State by not agreeing with the National Government?

  7. Hear, hear, Nadia – the protest was an uplifting experience on all levels – may there be many more with the same passion in the air – that was New Zealand again – watch out those in ‘so-called’ power – you’re day is nearly done.

    1. With reporters like Lisa Owen who rattle people media trained or not, I think it would be great if these reporters, when they come out with something like she said about the protesters annoying the traffic or just plain fibbing or shit stirring, were subtly but firmly put in their place by responding “that may be your reality, it isn’t mine or the protesters here”. There have to be ways to put these reporters in their rightful place. Winston is a class act at it. Treat them with the contempt they deserve. If they are too lazy to get meaningful opinion/facts out of the person being questioned then they shouldn’t be in the job. We are riddled with these types of heckling useless reporters unfortunately.

      1. Excellent.

Its time to get forceful on these media wimps.

This isn’t a Sunday school church picnic- this is our national sovereignty we are talking about, dammit !!!!
