  1. This is alarming….. I had no idea.
I’m very surprised there are not a number of comments either expressing concern or refuting Mike’s allegations.

  2. Shocking! Where has all the money gone from our rates – first we had to pay extra for Water care in a separate bill (that was supposed to be for sorting out the pollution problem years ago,) then there has been the huge amount of extra rates collected due to the rising house prices which also seems to be diverted from being used effectively on transport, all while public services are being dropped like berm mowing and libraries.

Auckland council planners seem to actively encourage people to make the houses as large as possible, as unsustainable as possible, go outside of the regulation permeable ratios and dump as much waster water into the water water system as possible, that used to go into gardens and permeable areas.

Then the unitary plan scam, where $500 p/h barristers hired by land bankers and right wingers effectively made their own rules with the government in the unitary plan to keep the lazy immigration ticking along and have less environmental regulation and allow development without suitable transport or infrastructure in place. The attitude is leave the problems to someone else to sort out, while we make a short term profit.

And many on the so called left were tricked into thinking it was all in their best interests often by the MSM and lobby groups being fed the same right wing discourses – ‘all in the name of affordablity, of course, sarc)..

Meanwhile joe blogs in Auckland now has more pollution, more expensive rates, a demolition every 5 minutes, less affordable housing, congestion (with the neoliberal solution being offered of ‘user pays’), poor public transport links and routes and no end in sight.

That’s just the people, what about the rest of nature in Auckland being eroded with poor water quality and less trees and green spaces for birds and other animals? Ancient Kauris and Pohutakawas make way for garaging and wider roads.

We used to kid ourselves that Kiwis were ‘clean and green’, now the truth has come out, it was just luck and low population levels, as soon as that changed, the government were eager to make us third world polluters with even less transport.

  3. Coxs Creek is absolutely disgusting. It is an open sewer feeding straight into the Waitemata. The blackened stinking sludge, complete with large casual rats at low tide smells toxic and the filth floating on the water at high tide is revolting.

As I write this Auckland has had 18 hours of constant rain and Coxs creek will be awash with sewer.

Worryingly we Aucklanders think it is safe to swim or even paddle in our harbour, especially around Pt Chev. If only we knew it is anything but!

Sir Dove Myer Robinson certainly cleaned up the mess of his era and those before but our crash and burn quick fix poll driven government and successive cut rates councils have squandered that good work.

This must be an election issue.
