  1. With half a million personal Indonesia has the second largest military in Aisa spending $8 billion a year on defence. They’ve got F-16s fighter jets and German & Korean made submarines and they’ve got a hundred German made Leopard2 main battle tanks. In contrast Boganville doesn’t have a defence budget. The Indonesians can not be hypnotised with guitars no way.

    1. West Papuan mothers are probably better off than many others in the region, including over the border.

They will be put in danger if wishful thinkers like the author think that armed conflict by a few hundred militants will make a difference. All it does is increase misery and postpones development projects for communities, something the current president has pledged to do.

Indonesia will never give up its Papuan Provinces. There is a statue in Jakarta celebrating the time the Indonesians took it over from the Dutch.

t is about time those who advocate violence for the impossible goal of independence stop doing so, and support development projects.

To compare the Papuan Provinces of Indonesia, a country with 11 million Melanesians among its 250 million population, is not comparing like with like.

  2. I asked McKinnon once how it was that the plight of the children of Bougainville moved him to action but the death of half a million Iraqi children left him indifferent. It was during the sanctions period in Iraq when NZ sent a frigate to help enforce them – chaired the sanctions committee in the Security Council etc. His answer was it was Saddam’s fault – and “he gassed his own people.” Geo-politics and being a loyal US ally trumps everything in McKinnon’s world.
I remember the Burnham thing a bit differently from you too. Moana Jackson, who had been working with the BRA and had visited Bougainville had considerable risk during the conflict, was barred from attending by McKinnon.
