  1. I agree with much of this analysis. Voters are however complicit – in that many of us fail to vote or vote according to tribal emotions and/or short term self interest. I would also point out that Russia, China and many other countries are hardly models of virtuous governance – at least in the West we can openly lampoon our so-called political ‘elites’ without being made to disappear. But none of this analysis addresses the deep, underlying issue that Homo sapiens is screwing the planet via climate change and degradation/overuse of fish stocks, arable land, clean water and strategic minerals. There is considerable concern form a number of authorities that this will increase unrest, poverty and mass migration in the next 10-50 years. We are not a very clever species.

    1. It can be argued that we are an extremely clever species -clever at manipulating objects and clever at transforming out environments- but that we are almost totally lacking in wisdom.

‘We’ have known for decades what would happen if we continued to burn fossil fuels, continued to pollute the Earth, continued to overconsume and continued to over-reproduce. So what do we do? Continue to burn fossil fuels, continue to pollute the Earth, continue to overconsume and continue to over-produce.

  2. Oh the joy of hearing some one attempt to be realist. I suspect that postmodernism was a clever ploy by the French to get revenge on the dominant Anglophone world but which back fired and now we are all disappearing down a rabbit hole.

i often hear people speaking of the “biggest/worst terrorist group” without ever comparing the reality of a body count. Body counts matter. So do questions such as how far is Aleppo from the USA, and if the South China Sea stand off was repeated just off the cost of California would the USA be threatening us all with nuclear winter? (that nice Kennedy boy did in the Cuban crisis)
