GUEST BLOG: Hone Harawira – A NOTE TO WAIKATO HOSPITAL
I just picked up this message from my cousin. I’ve taken out all the family stuff. but I’ve left in her comments about the care my aunty received while she was at Auckland Hospital. I’m posting this because of all the unnecessary grief Papa Carl Perkins and his whanau went through while he was at Waikato Hospital.
Just wanted everyone to know that most of the people who work in our hospitals – even Waikato – are really good, caring, sensitive and helpful people. They do a tough job under trying circumstances, and 95% of them do their best to help.

Thank you all so very much for looking after our Mother / Aunty / Sister / Mother Inlaw. For leaving an open door to our Whanau n those who came to show there love to our Mum any hr of the day or night, thanku so much.To all of you beautiful Nurses, thanku for the lovely bed manner shown n given to our mum whilst in hospital, thanku thanku. To the doctors/Registra/Specialist, that worked tirelessly behind the scene to find out what was going on with our Mother, though at times you must have felt…Ooh nooo Im fare getting me head bitten off, it was the love n care for our Mum/Sister that was coming through very strong. Tho the outcome hasnt been what we expected to hear u guys have been Awesome thanku so much. To the cooks/ Kitchen Staff yous were fantastic to us too, thanku. Thanku to our cleaner for cleaning Mums room, it was geat getting to know you n chat with u thanku thanku. Last but not least, Thanku to the many people involved in transporting mum to her many appointments n those involved in mums scans, ultrasound, x-rays, n many other test. Thanku Thanku all so so much for having us all.
Thumbs up to Auckland hospital and the people who work there, and everybody else in the health sector who do an amazing job! You rarely hear a bad word about Auckland hospital.
Hopefully Waikato can improve, there was quite a few comments about poor care from there on the standard so maybe an ongoing issue there… which hopefully will be rectified.
North Shore is also a hospital that needs improvement, but luckily (sarcasm) they have raised the costs of housing on the Shore to levels so that only 4% of Maori can afford to live there…so poor bicultural hospital care is not put to the test very often due to social cleansing.
Weird because you would think with all the wealth on the shore they would be able to attract great staff and have a fantastically run hospital – sadly I think the top story of the hospital might be private, not sure, but I guess one possibility is the neoliberals have got in there and destroyed the culture of care and once gone, it’s hard to get it back.
