  1. Journalists around the world are frequently detained, kidnapped and even killed – simply for reporting the news.

In the past 30 years, at least 1,400 journalists have been killed. Yet most of those responsible for their deaths have faced no accountability.

Unfortunately things are getting worse for Journalists everywhere but esp. in countries like The Philippine’s and Mexico

    1. @Festus. Totally agree but do you mind if I expand your comment – “Unfortunately things are getting worse for Journalists everywhere but esp. in countries like The Philippine’s and Mexico”. I think the “esp. in countries like The Philipine’s and Mexico” part should specifically include the USA, now that we know that the CIA plotted to kill Mr Assange.

Truth and accountability are concepts which are either disregarded or only paid lip service to by many countries including New Zealand and state organisations in those countries including state organisations in New Zealand.

    1. And NZ governments are terrified their our own secret services. Gough Whitlam’s fate taught that lesson.
Recall that Helen Clark repeatedly swallowed their BS over Ahmed Zaoui.

      1. Great example.. . because NZ did the right thing in the end… Clark eventually withdrew that position. It took collective work to have justice done. You can either say it’s impossible, and resign yourself to do nothing, and get a predictable result… or you can join a group of people committed to making it a reality:

  2. This would be an excellent way of getting some stored cred and directing attention away from other tetchy subjects. Go for it NZ – it’s in our best interests as supposed truth-tellers and persons of integrity. We don’t want our western ideals further besmirched by the neolib dissemblers in our wonderful allies that we are accumulating like fleas. Not good this Itchy and Scratchy feeling.

  3. I agree let’s give this great man of our time, sanctuary.
But remember our Kim.com fiasco, and don’t over play the ‘how decent are we’ card. Our blotter is NOT perfectly clean.

  4. For the past year corporate media have not reported on Julian Assange and the US assault on press freedom. To offer asylum for Assange in NZ would be a grand gesture for human rights and improve our standing in the world – as did our nuclear-free stance. A good summary of the persecution of Assange. Much appreciated.

  5. Yes, asylum for Julian Assange and for his financée and 2 children.
His ongoing treatment, torture really as the UN Rapporteur on Torture Nils Melzer tells us, is a warning to journalists everywhere.
    Very disturbing!
