GUEST BLOG: Bryan Bruce – Good grief!
I see National MP Judith Collins has complained to the Auditor General about taxpayer funding being used to underwrite KiwiBuild homes.
In the 1950’s and 60’s underwriting new home builds was government policy under both National and Labour governments .
Intervening in the housing market is how those governments actually solved the housing problem.
I am no great fan of the flawed Kiwibuild policy,but I am even less of a fan of the Judith Collins type of entrenched neoliberal mindset that thinks government should NEVER interfere with the marketplace.
Good grief. We have a housing crisis, a low wage crisis, a health and education crisis, because for over 30 years now neoliberal government after government has had a hands off approach to the marketplace.
It has meant the State has been serving the interests of Capital when it should be the other way around.
If there is any waste of public money here it is a very well paid MP wasting the expensive time of another well-paid publicly funded employee (the Auditor General) over some self-serving technicality.
Bryan Bruce is one of NZs most respected documentary makers and public intellectuals who has tirelessly exposed NZs neoliberal economic settings as the main cause for social issues.

I don’t think that Collins objecting to the source of funding for building houses presents her as a caring person at all.
A caring person would be exploring any initiative that can provide roofs over the heads of people living in cars, garages, sheds, under bridges, on park benches, in doorways and shopping mall car parks.
Or does Collins expect marae to have to take the lead in showing the current govt how to address homelessness just like they had to with Paula and the Nationals ?
Frankly, Collins sounds confused. On one hand she says that people should stop biffing and harming babies, and rightly so.
On the other hand she objects to taking steps to ameliorate the barbaric conditions which add so much to the stress and misery which can send families lives spinning out of control.
Maybe she’s just another click-bait baby, and that’s a crying shame
if it contributes to keeping people down.
“Stop biffing and harming babies… but letting them freeze themselves half to death because Mum and Dad are sleeping in the van again is completely acceptable. In other news, I should probably ease off the foundation a bit. I look like a cadaver in a wig.”
Good grief that picture would curdle milk.
Of course Collins doesn’t care she’s just horrible, some of the right admire her for it.
But we love Jacinda, the young vibrant caring veneer of neoliberal slavery.

JC does as JC pleases and whatever benefits her, her husband and their wealthy mates. She is not in Parliament to help the good citizens of this country.
