  1. “Or, if Russia has played to true to historic form, lost the first part of the war, learnt its lessons and is now moving into an effective mode of operations”.

Clear reference to WW2 and ominous for Ukraine however the Ukrainians will be similarly be gaining experience and learning from their mistakes.

  2. Russia has been playing smart all along, starting with fixing Ukrainian troops in Kiev and elsewhere while it went about its business in the south and east. You can’t be at the point of winning the war in less than three months with just 200,000 troops without knowing what you are doing.

  3. Putin has only sent 200,000 troops. He has 1,014,000 active personal and another 2,000,000 reservists. Add to this his superior technological weapons, such as super sonic, thermal and nuclear and Russias ability to get into trenches and suffer to win. This has only ever had one outcome.

If Volodymyr Zelensky can negotiate and cede areas in the east to save thousands of lives, he should take that step and end this war.

    1. One thing to have that number of “troops” at your disposal. Quite another to equip them and bring them screaming and kicking to the front line. Do those “troops” actually want to fight?

Russia is now bringing in mothballed T62 tanks for front line use. No sign of the much vaunted and ultra modern T14 Armata tank joining the fray. But train loads of T62’s coming out of storage.

With British and USA nuclear armed submarines lying in wait in the depths of the Baltic Sea, Russia’s use of nuclear weapons is mired in the MAD doctrine. Russia needs to deploy hundreds of nuclear weapons to take on NATO. NATO only two. One on Moscow (smack bang on the Kremlin) and one on St Petersburg. That will completely destroy Russia’s command and control infrastructure. Putin will be safe in his command bunker but as for the “middle class” Russians, not as much.

Currently we have the people in those “middle class” city centers not that interested in the war. They will be when the nuclear explosions destroy the cities.

The war will end when Putin is removed from office. Currently he has a grip on power but for how much longer?

      Worth a read;

Interview with Vladislav Inozemtsev, Russian academic and the director of the Moscow-based Center for Research on Post-Industrial Studies.

“I think Russia is going to become a very isolated country and its imperial identity will be either lost or rethought. It’s a huge challenge, both mentally, ideologically, economically, and geopolitically. So after the war ends — and it doesn’t depend how it ends — Russia will never be the same Russia we saw from 1991 till 2022. There’ll be another country, more backward, with fewer links to the world, much more isolated, and even more conservative than it was before the war.

Russia will become a power which looks only backwards. It wants to go back. It’s what I call an un-contemporary country, and it will accelerate its return to the Middle Ages. “

      1. Mothballed T62 tanks. Well, these tanks will be 50 years old and probably have not had their engines run for 10 years or more. They will literally be cannon fodder for modern anti-tank missiles and drones.

Two million reserves. At least half of who haven’t worn the uniform for 10 to 20 years. Russian reserves are not like those in the west. They are those who have previously served, but they don’t do any ongoing training. I bet they will be real enthusiastic to go to war.

  4. I’m happy with the government’s stance on Ukraine. Despite what Mike Smith might say it makes sense. Putin must be overthrown. My great grandfather was a Russian Naval captain and yet I hope that Ukraine manages to sink every Russian ship. My grandmother was born in Ukraine.

    1. Is something really fucked up in some slavs’ dna?

I wonder if the “Putin must be overthrown/defeated” cliche will turn out to be a self curse like the “Assad must go!” one .

  5. Anybody still think Ukraine is winning??
The “West” are bravely hanging on to the narrative, but even with near total media control
there is no denying what’s happening on the ground. And has always been happening.
Russia is easily winning. Ukraine is bravely defending, but suicidal courage and low moral
    ain’t gonna win this.
    They are being systematically destroyed.
All the hype in the world will not change the result.

Domestically, Russia gives Poots about 80% support for the limited war.
    Inflation is falling!
Supermarket shelves are loaded with food.
The Ruble is UP and the US Dollar is in free fall (as is there whole stinking country)
Russian Gas income of 1 Billion per day is covering the costs in Ukraine.
Overall, Poots and his Military are in total control, despite the “West”efforts.

USA hegemony is going out the window and about bloody time.

China with Russia and possibly India will be the new system.

So now Ukraine is fucked the yanks turn to a war with China. WTF?
    Good luck with that.
