  1. Thanks for keeping us up to date with the dirty tactics used against prisoners. New Zealanders have a very punitive attitude towards prisoners which is so unhelpful. Despite the fact that we know at least one of the Nordic countries has a great programme that has heavily reduced the number of prison inmates and re-offending we persist with our ‘un’ model.

    1. Good one Michal , great to see balanced and informed commentary from fair thinking members of the public , rather than the knee -jerk redneck reaction .

  2. Withholding reports is actually worse than suggested in Arthur Taylor’s blog. Not only did the Stuff series fronted by Paula Penfold reveal what had happened with Fight Club reports but there are other examples whereby the Department of Corrections treats the Official Information Act with disdain. Early in the tenure of Serco at Mount Eden, Serco was instructed by a senior staff member in the Department (not Mr Lightfoot) to mark their monthly reports as “Draft”. The logic was that a draft report was not complete and thus did not have to be released. That practice continued for many months and may even continue today. I understand that Serco had no objection to release of the reports but the Department did and, under the contract with Serco, the Department controlled such matters.
