  1. It appears that the article by the two Fairfax reporters is indeed misleading.

    The opening two paragraphs are inaccurate;

    Two iwi have quietly been paid huge top-ups, totalling $370 million, to their supposed “full and final” Treaty of Waitangi settlements.

    Waikato-Tainui received $190m and the South Island’s Ngāi Tahu $180m – more than they originally settled for in 1995 and 1998, respectively.

    Either Parahi and Wall are journo-students fresh out of their polytech courses and not knowledgeable on Treaty matters – or they have not bothered to make simple inquiries how Treaty settlements work.

    It’s been known for a fairly long time. The Relativity Clause allows Iwi to seek top-ups if subsequent settlements outstrip theirs, in terms of inflations, etc.

    From a 2012 Radio NZ article;

    A plan for Tuhoe to settle its grievances with the Crown will soon trigger top-up payments for two of the biggest iwi.

    Tuhoe and the Government on Tuesday announced they’re ready to sign their Treaty settlement.

    That will prompt the Relativity Clause to kick in for Ngai Tahu and Waikato-Tainui – meaning the tribes will collect more Crown money, under a deal struck when their Treaty settlements were signed.

    So it’s hardly the dastardly secret that the two journos make it out to be.

    Indeed, the journos refer to it a bit further down, though in a passing, cursory manner;

    It meant that once total Treaty settlement spending throughout the country reached $1 billion, the two iwi were entitled to payments proportional to other tribes’ settlements.

    Aside from the inaccuracy of the article, this is the kind of mis-information that feeds into racist hysteria.

    I’m guessing Fairfax will have a hard time explaining this deceptive “reporting” to the Press Council if Ms Edwards takes it that far.

  2. This is extremely bad journalism Alvina, which has a racist element to it.

    A copy to the Race Relations Conciliator and to your representative MP.

    Don’t let these tossers publish under the radar.

    Make noise!

  3. Thanks for the heads up Alvina. I see no corrections by Stuff have been made and its way past due that corporate media were pulled up for their inflammatory false and misleading clickbait articles that do nothing but incite hate.

  4. On the nail with inciting racism and hate.
    Divide and conquer is the goal of the MAN- has been for a long time.

  5. Thanks to the Dail Blog, for getting this out there, I have since lodged a formal complaint to Press council, I will certainly keep everyone updated, Ngaa mihi

    1. All the very best Alvina.
      The Stuff comments sections is where hope goes to die.
      When I need to remind myself of how nasty my fellow citizen can be, then reading the Stuff commentators outpourings proves a sad but powerful reminder.
