David Seymour not keen on swastika ban – despite gang patch crackdown
ACT leader David Seymour says he does not support banning swastikas in public, because he likes “knowing who the idiots in society are”, despite the coalition recently prohibiting the display of gang patches.
The comments come amid a large Mongrel Mob tangi in Lower Hutt and weeks out from the coalition’s ban on gang insignia kicking into effect.
Speaking in Auckland on Tuesday, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon was asked whether the government would follow Australia in also banning the Nazi salute and symbols, both of which are sometimes used by the Mob.
Luxon gave no indication such a move was being actively considered by the coalition, but did say: “We are up for those conversations.”
On Wednesday, Seymour told RNZ he was not in favour of a swastika ban.
“I hate those symbols and salutes, but I quite like knowing who the idiots in society are, and if they’re prepared to self identify like that, I think that’s actually helpful to everyone.”
Asked by RNZ why he took a different position when it came to gang patches, Seymour said that decision had been driven by the intimidating nature of such symbols.
“There’s a difference there,” he said. “People are genuinely intimidated by seeing certain gang patches and symbols.”
Sweet Jesus there is so much fucking stupid going on right now it is difficult to know where to begin.

Let’s unpack this and explain it so everyone can direct their rage where it should go, Chris Luxon.
Chris Luxon was responding to Mongrel Mob members making Nazi salutes.
The Mongrel Mob adopted the sieg heil and the Swastika as Mob regalia BECAUSE of their offensiveness. The Mongrel Mob (many of whom had been abused in State Care) saw society shunning them as a badge of honour, one which they exacerbated by using Nazi symbols.
I’m not justifying their use, I’m explaining them.
Luxon was asked about Mob members using the sieg heil at a Tangi and because Luxon has to butch it up, he said he was open to making it illegal.
Only National would ban the Nazi salute so they can arrest Māori.
David Seymour doesn’t want to ban the Nazi sale because despite his appalling back down on the Gang Patch Ban, he is still a freedom of expression libertarian (unless that expression is a Samoan Poet, then that’s the end of western civilisation as we know it).
Seymour has come in for criticism that the only reason he doesn’t want to ban the sieg heil is because he’s a Nazi, which while funny isn’t true.
Let me be clear, we shouldn’t ban the Nazi salute because it’s going to be used to arrest Māori!
We should be thankful Seymour won’t back this stupid idea by Luxon while criticising ACTs decision to ban the Gang Patch.
We should focus on criticising Luxon for suggesting this in the first place.

No no no totally disagree . This is no excuse for a so called libertarian. Tell the Palestinians that have died the women and children that Israeli guns and bombs have killed. The Israeli are taking out their anger on a world once dominated by the Swastika never mind its meaning ( who cares ). It’s a symbol of hate nothing more nothing less. The west ignored their plight because Germany was a friend of the west. Palestine is seen as their closest enemy the fall guy for the gas chambers and they don’t have to travel far to kill and injure . The west is now duty bound to support Israel in its hatred of all things in the Arab world because it ignored the swastika.
I agree Martyn. Perhaps the principled approach would be for Seymour to criticise the banning of gang patches. It’s short sighted, what will be intimidating next: stars of David and PLO flags?
They could start by having a dress code in Parliament as in other government workplaces. No dopey dress-ups, and parliamentarians presenting at Select Committee not coming along in their gardening gear.

You think we have a gang problem ?well guess what its about to get 10x worse .I have a family member who works in corrections and is totally shocked how people are being treated .Daily she is dealing with rapes ,assults and increasing mental illness .A very successful cultural program has recently been stopped so now a whole wing of the prison now has nothing to do
There is little or no rehab ,or mental health treatment happening and she has a real issue getting seriously ill people sent to hospital for treatment .
The new hospitals will do nothing to improve the situation as they are stark with very little natural light .
Since she has worked there she can see why there is a growth in gang numbers as apon release they are just thrown out on the street with no support
I have never met any skinhead as thirsty for the blood of innocents as Seymour and Simon Court are.
Well, what happened to free speech? I notice there is quite a revolting picture of a woman wiping her bum on this page but, well, yes, that’s free speech globohomo style a la education system down here. Learning a new language is good for the brain, I’m told.
