Greg O’Connor selected as Labour’s 2017 candidate for the Ohariu electorate – Labour Party
Greg O’Connor has been selected as the Labour Party candidate for Ohariu for the
2017 General Election. Labour Party members met this afternoon in Ohariu to select their candidate from two nominees who put their name forward.
“I am honoured to be chosen as Labour’s candidate for the 2017 election and I look forward to what will be a formidable contest to become the MP for Ohariu,” said Greg O’Connor.
“I will use the strong advocacy skills I developed in my previous role as Police Association President to represent the people of Ohariu.”
Labour’s President, Nigel Haworth, said: “Greg brings an unique set of skills and experience to Labour and will be an excellent advocate for the electorate. Our focus now is on electing a strong, Labour-led government next year that will rise to the challenge, back the Kiwi Dream and build a better New Zealand.”
This is good for the Greens.
I hope the MOU won’t prohibit them from standing a candidate in Ohariu.

Actually, the previous Labour candidate could have won Ohariu (in 2014) had Green voters given their electorate vote to Charles Chauvel (L) rather than Gareth Hughes (Gr). Giving the electorate vote to Hughes was not just a wasted vote (Electorates are still fought on the First Past the Post system), but enabled National to gain extra support with Peter Dunne’s victory.

Absolutely. I totally blame Dunne’s election on the Green’s inability to vote strategically, and all the subsequent measures that passed with his vote are also laid at their door. Let’s hope the Green can count better this time. If your conscience doesn’t allow you to vote for Labour in a marginal seat, what does your conscience tell you about helping elect john key’s toxic coalition!
