Government introducing longer prison sentences for assaulting first responders, prison officers
The Government is proposing longer prison sentences for people who assault first responders, such as paramedics, firefighters and prison officers.
The changes would create a new offence for assaulting an on-duty first responder or prison officer. The maximum sentences for assaulting with intent to injure, or injuring with intent to injure, would be increased by two years.
Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith described violence against first responders and prison officers as “heinous”.

We filled the prisons with hardened criminals with no real plans of how to house or rehabilitate them which has predictably led to an increase in attacks on Prison Officers (some of course whom are corrupt). Most attacks on ambulance drivers is driven by people panicking in the heat of the moment and a new law won’t stop that.
There is already legislation that allows extra charges of assaulting first responders, this is just bullshit pandering.
As for the new shoplifting powers, surely the spike in shoplifting driven by poverty and the highest unemployment in recent memory is driving shoplifting, a new traffic ticket scheme isn’t going to do a damned thing!

Luxon comfortable with expected increase in prison population due to reforms
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says he is comfortable with the anticipated swelling in the prison population, modelled to grow by 1350 at a cost of at least $152.7 million in the next decade, as a result of harsher sentence reforms. He has also suggested he will pour more money into expanding prisons in the coming years, given officials pointed out flaws in the modelling suggesting the figures could be higher.
“Frankly, the prison population will be what it will be,” he said. “What’s more important to me is that dangerous people are out of the community with a chance to rehabilitate.”
…of course he’s comfortable, it will mostly be Māori and poor people thrown into prison and the key thrown away, and we all know he deosn;t give a fuck about Māori or poor people!

Where are they going to house all of these new prisoners .The prisons are already half full of people on long term remand either waiting for a court date or for charges to be made up so they can go to court .Why does it take two years to get someone before the court .Maybe the government needs to get its shit together and have a 3 month time frame maximum that a person can be held in remand .If a person has been charged with murder or rape or some other serious crime that is a bit different .But there are thousands on remand for other crimes who have served more time on remand than they would if they had been to court and convicted with in that 3 month time frame .Then when they do get to court after sitting in remand for 2 years the judge sentences them to 3 months and everyone screams about a light sentence .But if the screamers looked ,they would find the maximum sentence allowed is less than the time already served .
They have the same mentality as those who put ambulances or hearses at the bottom of the cliff instead of building a decent fence at the top. They continually increase the causes of crime, then spend more on punishing the offenders so that they become even more disillusioned with society all while claiming to be sound financial managers. I expect that the usual developmentally retarded people will support these punishments because they are simple enough to think that out of sight, out of mind means that they are safe in their bubble little knowing that the weight of numbers will eventually tip or that if they don’t end up suffering now they will eventually.
