Auditor-General Martin Matthews stands down, investigation remains a secret
Matthews was head of the Ministry of Transport when senior manager Joanne Harrison stole $725,000 through fake invoices made out to non-existent companies.
After Harrison was convicted and jailed earlier this year, the committee asked senior public servant Sir Maarten Wevers to review his suitability to remain in the role. Opposition members on the committee were concerned that they had not been told the full story of Matthews’ handling of the fraud case.
Matthews, who received a draft version of Sir Maarten’s report in June, resigned before the committee had made a decision about his future.
Speaker David Carter said today that the committee members “saw no value” in releasing the report because Matthews had stood down and put an end to the matter.
Carter said he could give an assurance that there was no criticism in Sir Maarten’s report of the vetting process for Matthews.
He also ruled out any arrangement or settlement under which Matthews would agree to stand down on the condition that the report was withheld.
“No exit package was given,” he said.
…the report must be released! We must know what the bloody hell happened here! It is an outrage that they will hide the report, we the public deserve to know how a man like Matthews managed to become the Auditor-General when his incompetence at the Ministry of Transport was so egregious!
We have all waited for this report, that it’s been hidden is unbelievable. It doesn’t matter if Matthews left and wasn’t given a severance package, that is simply a by-product of the report, we all need to see it!
There must be people within the public service who have a copy, we urge them to leak it to the public so we can all read what they are trying to hide.

Why else would they need to with hold that report as they have done with so many others.
I’ll bet SS Joyce is wrapped up inside this report too, as he was highly active in the re-organisation of the NZTA/MoT amalgamation and closing down of a lot of departments within them.
They just cant lie straight in bad or standing up.
Can someone place a wit in court to order a copy be reviewed by opposition members, or do a OIA order??
As this coverup gets out into the public it will send another negative message about the secretive lot this mob really are and taint an already corrupt National Government administration.

Withholding the report was not a decision of the Government. It was a decision of the Officers of Parliament Committee.
But go ahead and make things up.
We see an increasing political control over the public service. This withholding is a reflection of that surely.
You know what I think ?… I think a lot of these ‘ Sir’s ‘ need a good looking into.
I think we have put up with enough of these corrupt types rorting our system for far too long. I think its time that the title ‘ Sir ‘ is reserved only for those who performed services to the less well off in society.
Maybe that would be pay back for 1000 years of murdering peasants , exploiting their labour and using them as cannon fodder for their wars. And then becoming nothing more than corporate raiders and outright thieving criminals in the last two century’s.
And I’m thinking in terms of one money trader in particular who shat all over this country recently.

A little bird told me there’s a very good reason why the report is being kept secret. Mathews may have had a liaison with a certain convicted fraudster.
The media is too preoccupied with their feeding frenzy over Metiria Turei when she was 23 and on the DPB.

It’s pretty bloody obvious that for all his alleged incompetence, Matthews stumbled across some bodies, including some key bodies around service privatization during his sojourn at the auditor general’s office.
In that case he wouldn’t need an official package, when a better deal was to be had from the good old boys passing the christchurch hat around.
Yep its not coming out because we are very close to an election and they the Natz are crapping themselves that this document gets out. I hope it is forced by winston to be released before the election.

FFS. I agree that the report should be released. However it was not a decision of the Government. It was a decision of the Officers of Parliament Committee. There are seven members. Only two are members of the National Party.
