  1. With giant companies like this we just need a simple way of revoking their licence to operate and telling them to eff off. The country would be far better off without McDonalds – far more variety and authenticity in the food service business and far more opportunities for local businesses to start up.
And yes – it would be in violation of various trade agreements and invite retaliation, but to quote Jim Baxter (Ballad of the Stonegut Sugarworks) “to shovel sh*t and eat it are different in the end”

    1. The ‘locals’ aren’t any better, just ask anyone employed on a dairy farm, an orchard, or your local Ma and Pa restaurant…

  2. IHC is not much better. They have ceased all negotiations with Etu Union and many of their community support workers haven’t had a pay rise since 2015. The rate of $17.28/hr is unchanged for the past 2 years! IHC has also cut back of travel allowances for CSW staff, meaning many of them have to use their cars at their own cost, to ferry clients around.

    1. Just wonder, who pays IHC for the contracts they have entered into, for delivering social and disability services? Ah, the government, ah, well, what kind of government do we have?

  3. Not only these guys
I have regular discussions with builders and the likes here in Christchurch at my work on a regular basis many of them have not had a wage rise from a employer gor up to 14 years .
Most bosses these days dont give wage rises and from what i am told today every one on an individual contract and offered 20 joyrs a week with more hours if available even though they may do 40 hours all they are guaranteed is 20.
    Ual
Where has the fair kiwi boss gone who regularly rewarded his workers for loyalty and average cost of living increases.

It seems all New Zealand has now are bosses who pay the minimum wage and offer partime casual contracts of 20 jours as my young 24 year old friend in hastings has been offered twice in the last 6 months at apple packing houses .

New Zealand bosses you bloody stink.

If these national party pricks are booted out we are doomed.

    1. The last line was meant to be if these national party pricks are not booted out we are doomed to a country of minimal if ant wage rises as bosses pocket the profits .

  4. So it is happening again, I am not one bit surprised. Anything signed with these companies, it will immediately hollowed out or somehow undermined, by using loopholes in the law and so, to get around any obligations.

The companies like McDonald’s have their legal experts, who already plan their next steps before the ink has dried on a contract that is signed.

  5. “We have also initiated legal action against Burger King over the interpretation of the collective agreement. When we signed the agreement in October 2015 it had guaranteed “shifts” in the wording rather than hours. We considered this a step forward beyond the McDonald’s agreement. But since the agreement was signed the company has continued to operate essentially the same system as McDonald’s with “hours” being rostered rather than “shifts”.”

So that’s how the corporate sector sees contracts, huh? Something to be ignored.

    Pricks.
