Youth MPs can’t agree whether they are being silenced
In a plot twist worthy of Parliament, Youth MPs aligned with NZ First will hold their own press conference to push back on the narrative that Youth Parliament is muzzling dissenting youth voices at 1.30pm. There are 123 Youth Members of Parliament (Youth MPs) at Parliament, selected by sitting MPs, to represent young people across the country. Additionally, there are 20 Youth Press Gallery members (ages 16–24) reporting on the proceedings. The two-day Youth Parliament event, which finishes today, runs every three years, and young people debate mock bills, ask questions, and take part in select committees. They also deliver speeches and make points of order.
On Wednesday a group of them, associated with Make It 16 (a group pushing for the voting age to drop), as well as Gen Z Aotearoa and SchoolStrike4Climate, released a statement accusing the the Ministry of Youth Development of censorship. They said they’d been told to avoid politically contentious topics, such as climate change, and criticising ministers. But the Ministry said it only suggested changes to improve their speeches and to ensure they maintained the non-partisan approach of Youth Parliament.
Now, those associated with Government political parties want to have their say, and claim the other side is misrepresenting what happened. Stuff spoke to one 17-year-old representing a National MP who said their colleagues who had complained were pushing a political agenda.
…at 17 they sound like they are 77.

The reviewers came out and said ,yes they did suggest changes to the speeches .This is another smoke screen by the swamp dweller party to cover up the fact that freedom of speech is no longer allowed in NZ under this government .
OLD SCHOOL thinking prevails ,young people should be seen and not heard .Clearly the COC did not want the world to hear what the next generation really have to say so the set up a diversion .I have not seen one main stream media report on any of the speeches .SAD DAY FOR NZ .
