  1. Great stuff but Kiwis who are so into ‘punishment’ will never allow this to happen.
Perhaps if the results are thrown in their face including the money that is spent on this prison compared to ours.

  2. We have had something close to this before – Ohura Prison in South Waikato was a low security institution for white collar criminals. No fences or razor wire, just the expectation that you wouldn’t run away.
Indeed Rangipo / Hautu prison was once like this as well – no fences or gates, just open fields and little huts where the inmates were expected to remain. Few ever broke the trust as they were mostly close to their release and knew that absconding meant being sent back to the ‘rock’ (Mt Eden) where they would have to serve even more time.
Corrections is so risk-averse now that even low-security institutions have high fences and security everywhere.

  3. We need to start the re education process with these people as they have never been educated properly that is why they have ended up in Prison in the first place.
