  1. making dental care universally available would be of immense benefit to poor and ordinary New Zealanders.

Yes. It would. And it would be an investment in the longer term health of everyone.

  2. Free dental is a great idea but fix the current problems in health before another cost is added to the load.
Nurses and Doctors both need to be better supported with more money spent on more staff and resources. Mental health is a cot case poorly handled by National and no great advancement in reality despite Labour putting money to one side for the sector. GPs are a declining breed and many are burnt out and due to retire in the next 10 years.which will lead to many problems. Hospital buildings are in need of upgrades in many areas. Here in Chch we are still using a wing condemned after the 2012 earthquake.
The last problem is even it was free there are not enough dentists now . The clinic I attend there are 5 dentists and the wait time is 3 weeks unless it is urgent.

    1. I kind of agree Trevor but…

It is obvious to me that our health system is severely underfunded anyway, picture proof of that is our appallingly low ICU bed to population ratio, down there with Mexico and a leading reason our approach to Covid was so so conservative up until now. By pure unplanned consequences, prevention has been less lethal than cure however.

Yes, more investment in health in general is badly needed but dental care can accompany that too because dental care in this country has always been terrible. We know with Nationals lust for mindless tax cuts, it will never happen under them and our health system will further deteriorate if, for no other reason, there won’t be the money anyway.

As said above, the Ardern Labour government will have very little positive for the history books and next to nothing to go into the next election with. Their achievements are embarrassingly few and far between. We all know their announcements of future promises are worthless so what they badly need is substance! This is it and it is worthwhile!
