Double standards run new government policy on Israel/Gaza – Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa
PSNA is accusing the new government of double standards in its policy towards Israel/Gaza.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says he is “heartbroken” at the scenes of civilian slaughter in Gaza while Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Peters says the death toll in Gaza is “horrific”.
These comments are meaningless without sheeting home the blame where it belongs – on Israel’s wholesale slaughter of Palestinians in its murderous rampage through Gaza. At least 15,523 Palestinians have been killed so far, including at least 6,600 children – the equivalent of all the students in 24 average sized New Zealand primary schools.
However the new government has not uttered a single word of criticism of Israel.
“We were deeply critical of the previous government’s silence on the brutal murder of Palestinian civilians while being quick to condemn the killing of Israeli civilians”, says PSNA National Chair John Minto. “The new government is no better”.
“This is the worst double standard – condemning the victims and excusing the perpetrators”.
“It shouldn’t be what Aotearoa offers to the world. New Zealanders are compassionate and fair by nature. We expect the new government to speak for all New Zealanders by condemning all political violence”.
“There is no room in a civilised world for double standards of any sort – such as upholding the rights of one group while denying the rights of another”.
“New Zealand’s “soft on Israel, hard on Palestinians” policy will only encourage Israel to try to drive Palestinians out of Gaza and into the Sinai desert over the Christmas/New Year period when the attention of the western world is elsewhere” says John Minto.
“Palestinians should expect New Zealand to have their back – we haven’t. In situations like this, silence is violence.”
The new government is making us all complicit in Israeli war crimes against Palestinians.

What did all those Palestinian women children do to deserve being obliterated? They had nothing to do with these atrocities. It’s the same bullshit argument over and over. ‘Hamas bad’ so all innocents must die. Contemplate that and get back to me.
So Israel should deal with the people who attacked them, they are about 16000 over that limit & most of them are women & children so there is nothing reasonable about their response.
You also ignore that Israel does not belong in Gaza & has historically killed many more Palestinians for the last 75 years so this problem is not as clear cut as you pretend it is.
These BBC atrocity stories are hardly plausible. There are no complainants, no witnesses, no material evidence, and Israel won’t cooperate with an investigation by the International Criminal Court. The allegations are being made purely to justify Israeli war crimes which for which there millions of complainants, millions of witnesses, and many square kilometres of material evidence.
The only thing I would object to in John’s article is the suggestion that “The new government is making us all complicit in Israeli war crimes against Palestinians”. Not all of us, John. Only those who support or condone the colonial regime in New Zealand.
Hamas’s grievance is now irrelevant as they have committed crimes against humanity. Their cause is lost.

John Minto is ready to accept the figures provided by Hamas about the civilian death toll in Gaza. A week or two ago in a post on TDB, he was ready to believe reports being circulated by Hamas apologists that many of the Israelis who died on October 7 were actually killed by friendly fire. Minto credited the Israeli newspaper Haaretz with this revelation.
Outraged by such claims, Haaretz has responded: “Haaretz has reported on two instances where sources told reporters that in the midst of the massacres, IDF forces firing at Hamas terrorists may have also hit, not confirmed killed, some civilians. Malign actors have exploited this reporting, published with no context, to purposefully decontextualise it and falsely claim that Haaretz corroborated the false theory that the IDF committed mass killings of its own people.
