  1. Someone with credibility please start a REAL and honest left wing party. Labor only get in as we have no alternatve left of their soft-right-wing political position to vote for.

  2. Once again I find myself completely agreeing with you John. Maybe a $1000 cap, with an annual inflation adjustment each election cycle. Out of interest, presumably your proposed cap would also apply to trusts, unions and NGO’s etc?. Perhaps it is time to provide taxpayer funding for election campaigns based on a weighted average of seats held in say the prior three election cycles, although this would no help any new partiers that are formed. A tough one.

  3. Listening to Max Broadbent who was talking about Canada where political parties are only allowed to receive donations up to $1500.

I’m all for that, I want to know who is giving dosh and how much.

With local body, we should know also how much and who a while before the actual elections.

But we must also cover off things like the Mao book which was auctioned off for an enormous amount of money by Labour, all these people need to be identifiable. So auctions, raffles etc.

I should be able to open a spread sheet and see where the money has come from at local and government level.

  4. The other concern I have is the money that the two right wing groups, taxpayers union and the NZ Institute get lots of publicity. Whilst we can guess, we don’t have a list of their donors.

Everyone knows that the CTU and some of their affiliates give money to the Labour Party, and sometimes to the Greens.

  5. Plain and simple : Donations to political parties corrupts our democracy.

Any system that allows / encourages political decisions in favour of those that donated cash to the decision makers is participating in an illegal practice known as a “conflict of interest”

“A conflict of interest occurs when an individual’s personal interests – family, friendships, financial, or social factors – could compromise his or her judgment, decisions, or actions in the workplace. Government agencies take conflicts of interest so seriously that they are regulated”……..yea right !

    What Is a Lobby?

The term lobby refers to a group of people who band together and try to influence people in public office and politicians. A lobby is typically formed to influence government officials to act in a way that is beneficial to the lobby’s or an industry’s best interests, either through favorable legislation or by blocking unfavorable measures. The term is also used as a verb to describe the influence that a group of individuals exerts over other people.

  6. Politics is already corrupted, starting with the most powerful nation on Earth, the USA, and spreading from them, thereafter. One could say this is capitalism in action, if not human nature itself, but until we acknowledge this form of moneyed corruption, then trying to get our own act together, as noble as it clearly is, is nonetheless worthless.
