  1. Whether or not one is anti or pro 1080, we should all be worried about the state of our public service – particularly at senior management levels.
The growing trend to be as punitive as possible towards a public they are there to serve is utterly arrogant and shows a complete misunderstanding of what their role is.

They’ll justify their stance by saying that the public is being naiive if they don’t understand the need for their shady activities.
They’ll hide behind trite old excuses such as it ‘being an operational matter’.
It doesn’t matter if it’s the WINZ ‘Tinder date’ issue and complete bullshit that followed; OR the MBIE ‘demographic profiling’; OR the NZDF Burnham Affair; or this DOC issue.

It seems to have become culturally entrenched among many in senior management positions within the public service.
And the PSA attitude is shameful.
What made DOC think it OK? Why, if they’re worried about the safety of their employees, are they not letting the NZ Police handle it?

RNZ’s Brent Edwards did an ‘Insight’ programme back in 2015:
    “Politics and Public Servants” http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/insight/audio/201781443/insight-for-6-december-2015-politics-and-public-servants
but even then, it did not get to the core of what is going on.

It’s vaguely reminiscent of and incident several years ago where a public servant was instructed NOT to call police over a criminal matter. Instead, senior management decided they’d call in a private investigator “to determine whether the police should be called or not”.
(They weren’t, and as things trnspired, they’re damn lucky they didn’t end up facing defamation proceedings).

And the worst thing is that arrogance is so entrenched that they think they have a divine right to push back against the expectations of their responsible ministers (and presumably state services commissioner).

The answer (@Shane Jones), is not to further politicise the public service, (I can understand his frustration), but sure as shit it IS to haul in a few and remind them what their role is.
