  1. There is absolutely NO way we can support Trump’s war mongering America!
To do so would be wrong on every level!
America is behaving like a total asshole, closely resembling Nazi Germany.

NO MORE mindless killing, NO MORE global oppression, NO MORE blindly following our colonial overlords!

Let’s not be America’s Bitch anymore!

That’s never stopped us in the past, even though that’s been the case since WW2. Every US president in my lifetime – going all the way back to Eisenhower, with the possible exception of Kennedy – has been a warmonger.

No thanks Uncle Sam.Enough is enough

  4. Right.

And how fortunate we are that the Hollywood groupie is no longer
up in Parliament and able to bellow at other people’s whanau to get some guts.

  5. A big thumbs up to Martyn’s post.

Please, no NZ support for a US led conflict with Iran, or with any other nation for that matter.

It’s obvious the US is igniting the dangerous fuse of a war with Iran, to boost Trump’s appeal to his warmongering support base and will use any country stupid enough to become involved. Britain is half way there already.

The only winners will be the US arms industry.

  6. Personally, I doubt that the US will go to war at this point. Iran has a good hand to play, with sophisticated military technology, disciplined military forces, and a civilian population which despite its serious political divisions will rally together in the face of attack from the US and/or Saudi Arabia.
The Iranian regime has played its cards well (contrast that with the bumbling incompetence of the British government) with just the right balance between proportionality (capturing a British tanker in retaliation for the British seizure of an Iranian vessel) and firmness (seizing a second British vessel just in case the lesson of the first was not fully absorbed).
I am not too worried about the prospect of Her Majesty’s New Zealand forces being sent to die in another unprovoked and unjust imperialist war, this time against Iran, but if the possibility became likely, the sensible response would be to ensure that the royalist military forces were fully engaged on our home soil.
By the way, Paul Buchanan, an occasional voice of reason among Five Eyes political commentators, offers an interesting and intelligent analysis of the Iran-US standoff at kiwipolitico.com.

    1. Geoff Fischer: “By the way, Paul Buchanan, an occasional voice of reason among Five Eyes political commentators, offers an interesting and intelligent analysis of the Iran-US standoff at kiwipolitico.com.”

Thanks for that tip. It’s a useful piece. I’d largely given up on reading Buchanan, having been a bit irritated by his opinions about international events a few years ago. His site is back among my bookmarks! Though I’m sure that I’ll disagree with him over something at some point in the future….

  7. Geopolitics.
Iran is no threat to NZ but strategically important to US interests.
We are an ally, a five eyes partner.
If we want the US to have our backs with China, they may expect a level of support in whatever fight they pick.
Let’s hope if it comes to that, we can avoid boots on the ground.

  8. How can we attempt to rein in global warming when the US wants to start a war almost every month somewhere in this miserable world. Nothing is worse for global warming than endless war. From the energy expended by exploding bombs to the energy needed to replace all those concrete ruins by other concrete buildings the end result is a massive increase in the worlds carbon footprint.
We Kiwis need to have an independent pro-peace stance and that is incompatible with our recent large increase in our defence budget. Other nations will have noticed and drawn their own concusions.

    1. Apparently US military is responsible for CO2 emissions = to 140 whole countries.

  9. Why conflate Trump with another regime change ‘ intervention’? Uncle Sam has a long history of ‘ intervention ‘ regardless of current leader. Is it approximately fifty or so, and counting….?

    1. Philj:”Why conflate Trump with another regime change ‘ intervention’? Uncle Sam has a long history of ‘ intervention ‘ regardless of current leader.”

True enough. Folks here also need to remember that Trump hasn’t started another war yet. Unlike his predecessor(s).

      1. So you need him to start one to review your opinion of him??

And *when* he does blunder into another war, will you then be the apologist for him again and blame it on “poor advice”??

        1. Mjolnir: “And *when* he does blunder into another war, will you then be the apologist for him again and blame it on “poor advice”??”

An apologist? More have-you-stopped-beating-your-wife-yet assertions, I see. I remind you: I’m not (I’m pleased to say) American; I’m a NZ citizen. Therefore I’m not a Trump – or any other US president in my longish life – supporter. None of them has been my president.

However. I’m an observer of politics, including international politics, since (I’ll take a bet) before you were born. I’ve lived through stuff that you’ll have to go to textbooks to find out about.

It appears that you haven’t been paying attention to what’s been happening, over a very long period. As Mosa points out, it isn’t Trump who wants war with Iran: it’s chickenhawk Bolton. And if there’s any blundering, it’ll be Bolton. Who wants your – and my – heck, anybody but his – offspring to fight in a war that he’s been busting a boiler to start since – oh, forever.

However. It looks as if Trump has Bolton on a leash of sorts. It is to be hoped that the experience of the thick end of one term as president has taught him what he needs to do to control neocons such as Bolton and Pompeo.

And on the bright side, la Clinton lost the election. Whew! Close-run thing there…

Here you go. Read this; you sure need to:

          1. When Trump is attacked, default to Hilary Clinton??

Is that the standard we’re at??

You can justify anything, anywhere, anytime, just point to someone else as a supposedly worse option??

No, I dont buy the Clinton Is Worse option

          2. “As Mosa points out, it isn’t Trump who wants war with Iran: it’s chickenhawk Bolton. ”

And chicken hawk Bolton was appointed by………..??

          3. “And on the bright side, la Clinton lost the election. Whew! Close-run thing there…”

Clinton didn’t appoint Bolton the Chickenhawk. Trump did.

Clinton isn’t threatening Iran. Trump is.

            Clinton isn’t president. Trump is.
