How can politicians and policy-makers reform the welfare system so that it is fit for families in the 21st century?
Reform must be based on principles of compassion and caring, and the real needs of families, without stressful over-emphasis on paid work, and punitive, corrective methods.
The purpose of the Summit – Rethinking the Welfare System for the 21st Century – is to fulfil an urgent need to influence the welfare reform agenda, which is a key focus for the current Government. Increasing awareness among the public, politicians and policy makers about chronic problems across the welfare system, and discussing developments to improve that system, could result in it working much better for families and children.
A full-day programme of speakers aligned to this cause will provide their perspectives and recommendations on an effective welfare system that would ensure all children in Aotearoa-New Zealand grow up thriving.

I like the idea of universal benefit. Everyone from care givers, students, stay at home parents to billionaires gets it. No (mean) means testing, no bureaucracy.
You could also get rid of the pointless (because the economy just readjusts) minimum wage. Low skill employees would have the power to not accept low paid jobs.
Put the payment on a card that can only be used to pay for essentials like mortage, rent, food, cars, etc. Not booze, gambling, cigarettes etc.

What about Belgian chocolate, fine wine, rare meats, Dover sole, Oeufs Mornay,
Profiteroles or Peach Flambe?
Any of those dependent on the welfare system being asked to contribute to this summit, or is it only for the lofty experts and politicians?
all that needs to be done is simply reset the 1964 Act to its original form,
Might as well reset the ACC act as well and keep the convent that politicians made with kiwis when they removed the right to sue, or reinstate the right to sue negligent employers.
Also the Legal Aid statues need reinstated as a country that cant afford justice, wont get any.
This is what has destroyed our community and raped our resources, removal of our basic human and civil rights.
