‘New Cold War’: China-NZ relationship rapidly deteriorating
New Zealand’s relationship with China is rapidly deteriorating as the country is swept up in what long-time trade and foreign policy adviser Charles Finny describes as a “new Cold War” caused by the Western alliance pushback on Chinese cyber-espionage.
He’s warning New Zealand companies operating in China to watch for signs of difficulties with customs procedures or government permissions, and for changes in tourism and international student arrivals.
Adding to the strain on a relationship that Finny believes has gone from constructive to troubled in the last six months was yesterday’s disclosure that an investigation into complaints about Chinese government subsidies on steel imported to New Zealand has been reopened following a September court order.

…these tensions are ratcheting up because China and America’s Pacific Cold War is starting to get hot.
To think we will be immune from such volatility between China, Australia and America is delusional.
To date NZ has managed to keep out of any direct confrontation with China because China bought the National Party and the National Party have done everything in their power to bend over backwards to Beijing.
The fact there is a Chinese spy inside the National Party caucus highlights how compromised National have become. The most inane part of the JLR implosion was that the NZ media decided to focus on his supposed inter personal heteronormative patriarchy privilege and abuse of women rather than the evidence that a Chinese businessman tried to buy two Chinese National’s a place on the National Party list.
The real reason behind why Winston has clung to a FTA with Russia is to counter any Chinese move to hurt us economically with threats against our dairy industry. As conflict builds, how will China respond to the weakest member of the 5 Eyes?
We know Chinese newspaper editors in NZ all take their editorial stance from the Chinese Government and calling for mass demonstrations against a perceived anti-China bias would cause enormous social upheaval that could easily spill into something ugly.
NZ-Asians face the most overt racism in NZ, there is a huge tension building beneath the mild surface of NZ society, and we aren’t prepared for when it ruptures.

It’s not possible to get mass demonstrations here.
I think the best we’ve ever been able to muster is a thousand or so people – and it’s just not enough.
I look at the turnouts overseas where they easily get several hundred thousand people and then I think about the attitude of the Kiwi – the ‘she’ll be right mate’ sentiment that places the responsibility in someone else’s shoes.
The problem with NZers is they’ll just sit back and allow china to take over the country, then demand answers afterwards as to how this could happen!
The detractors have accused anyone who is anti-china as being xenophobic. Very convenient and nothing more than a smoke-screen.
The truth of the matter is that people are anti-china for very good reaosns – many of which are starting to become apparent only now.
The sale of our houses.
The sale of our farms.
The sale of rights to our resources such as natural spring water.
We were fortunate that Aunty Jacinda was able to step in (in the nick of time) to put the brakes on some of this madness. I think she is doing her diplomatic best to close the gates while not being seen as openly giving china the middle finger.
The arrogance of the chinese government and all who serve it is plain to see.
They have already been caught out hacking into computer systems world-wide, and their Huawei 5G cellular equipment isn’t for the benefit of consumers – it’s nothing more than a data interception machine.
Winston isn’t silly – he knows how to play the game, he’s played against some of the best – and won.
When the NZ-china situation turns to shit (and it will) it will be the start of a reset – one that is largely overdue.

I have got to agree with you Doc. The GCSB’s banning of Huawei equipment is all about sucking up to the other 5 eyes “partners” who are unable to hack this new communication system and in the long run will be detrimental to NZ.

Of course NZ also needs to protect its farmland, housing stock, industry etc from excessive overseas control.
Russia and the Dairy Trade with Russia has always been important Trade for New Zealand. Previous Governments here in NZ have pandered to every USA whim.
