  1. well said and let be hopeful that kiwis can embrace our differences and go to those dark places and develop the stamina to sustain attention on an issue as charged and uncomfortable as race.

Since racism is necessarily uncomfortable in that it is oppressive, understanding of racism we need to be trained to think in complex ways about it and acknowledge any discomfort associated with challenges to our racial worldviews that they are unfamiliar, reflect on them further, or seek more information.

What we should avoid is the lack of humility to racial illiteracy (because we don’t know what we don’t know), when we get this break-down we so often see when trying to engage people in meaningful conversations about race.

  2. Don Brash gave that speech 14 years ago so the critique seems a little late. Winston and NZ First seem to have picked up the baton so focusing on their policies might be more appropriate. Personally I would prefer politicians like yourself offer some visionary solutions that work across party lines to address those appalling statistics you quote.

    1. Good speech Willie.

You was good on Q+A today also, keep it up mate.

Please get Greens/NZ First to join Labour, before the election to rid this bloody criminal sellout corrupt Government.

  3. >> The third tactic promoted by Horowitz which shaped the Orewa speech was resentment and Brash crafted that by claiming Maori were a privileged minority with a “birth right to the upper hand”, who had “greater civil, political and democratic rights than any other NZer” and “power to veto” development “which could provide us all with jobs”.

Brash even went as far as to suggest that “non-Maori” who supported “the Maori cause” were in fact a treacherous “fifth column”. <<

It's genuinely considered poor form in online political debates to compare people or positions one disagrees with to the Nazis. That's because it is. But sometimes, the comparison is fair. Replace "Māori" in these quotes with "jews", "NZer" with "German", and "non-Māori" with "communist", and it could be a quote from Mein Kampf. It's truly chilling that a politician could engage in this kind of fearmongering and divisive kōrero and realistically expect to gain votes.

    1. Don was a bit pushed for time so had to leave out important examples of –
“birth right to the upper hand”, who had “greater civil, political and democratic rights than any other NZer” and “power to veto” development “which could provide us all with jobs”.

as these imbalances are held by the mainly European landed wealthy and built on by the banks and multinational investors who don’t even live here.

While the Govt power to create jobs far exceeds any investor or business tycoon, The neoliberal govt is ideologically adverse to any job creation except indirectly by subsidising privatising and disenfranchising the public of their assets so the wealthy can profit further usually with no trickle down . Importing cheap labour and undercutting the Kiwi is widespread and happening now.

Brash is corrupt morally and working for others , not Kiwis.

          1. Well , there most certainly would appear to be grounds to convict many of these people of subversive activity. And that would extend back to historical incidences committed under Roger Douglas onward’s.

          2. Yeah. I was a little carried away with the whole banish thing. Would have been choice. Traitor will have to do.

And another thing. What’s up at TS. Is it me or have they fallen for the the right wing conspiracy trap and started talking plaque.

  4. He aha te mea nui o te ao?
He tangata, he tangata Te Pou.

    Tatou Tatou.

    Thank you Willie.

  6. William Jackson (Willie)

As Cleangreen said, You were very good on Q & A this morning. In Command. But generous, not smart ass or smug.

In your speech above, You looked to me a true Statesman – drawing us together – each for our personal dignity and our personal good. Constructive. Proud. Problem Solving. A man for now and for our Future.

Go for it William Jackson !

  7. unfortunately we are in for another 3 years of national policies don’t matter its all about house prices there is no way heavily indebted home owners will allow kiwi build or any policy to build homes. iam afraid the young the working poor and the precariot will just need to suck it up. until there willing to vote there is no alternative to the current environment. they need to except being homeless and disenfranchised
    thats the way it is.

    1. I’m assuming this is satire, but either way it’s a good example of comments designed to induce learned helpness as a political strategy. Don’t fall for it.

The latest poll results show that there is a hunger in the electorate for the Greens push to the left. The poll puts the Greens on 15% and the election campaign proper hasn’t even started yet. It also shows a similar-size backlash against Labour’s fence-sitting; “which side are you on?”

    2. Wouldn’t count those National party chickens just yet Darth, its not a foregone conclusion.

  8. This poll result makes it very clear that Labour can’t grow their vote by pursuing the mythical “centre” vote, who really only swing back and forth between National and NZ First to distract Labour and pull them to the right. If Labour want to form a government with the Greens, it’s still possible. But to inspire the downtrodden and get them to the polls, they need to show that such a government would be something fundamentally different from a centre-right government, in which NZ First choose either National OR Labour to govern with.

Labour’s recent smug fence-sitting won’t cut it. Andrew Little needs to aks himself a simple question; “am I a Milliband or a Corbyn”? He needs to choose now, and act like it.

    1. Dont get hung up on polls that are created in some office. The one that counts hasn’t happened yet.

  9. Just awesome Willie, very pleased you are an important member of the Labour party. I look forward to seeing you in parliament !!!
