Former National Party minister and America’s Cup campaign director Anthony “Aussie” Malcolm was the subject of multiple complaints of historical child sexual abuse and was under police investigation at the time of his death, Stuff can reveal.

- The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care reported “deeply suspicious” allegations of politicians and public servants preying on children;
- The Herald has obtained a police inquiry report from 1992 in which similar allegations were probed;
- Minister of Police John Banks – an abuse survivor himself – says he would not have stood by while children were being hurt.
The allegations are alarming – that senior politicians and public servants in the 1980s carried out organised abuse of children in care.
And then, using their influence, it was claimed they avoided – and continue to avoid – accountability decades later.
Those were the claims made to the Royal Commission into Abuse in Care which, remarkably, reported on the allegations as “deeply suspicious” but lacking “direct evidence”.
…This could all be a lie and some grift by a disgruntled journalist, but there was more evidence of these allegations beyond what was reported in the newspapers at the time.
That evidence sits inside the testimonies of state abuse survivors and gagged by restraining orders once settlement is agreed.
Their stores tell of coordinated abuse at the hands of the powerful, those stories will never get told.
If there was an organised ring of public servants, police and politicians abusing children in state care, then it would have been classified a state secret and no possibility of finding anything via OIA.
However, we do have glimpses of monsters and those monsters have left a trail…
Ron Brierley has been jailed for possessing child sexual abuse images.
The 84-year-old former knight and famed corporate raider in New Zealand and Australia was sentenced today in Sydney to 14 months’ prison after pleading guilty to possessing tens of thousands of child sex abuse images
“Images of this kind are neither innocuous or benign,” Judge Sarah Huggett told the court, noting Brierley had collected images over years.
“For decades he had been an intelligent and high functioning businessman … his offending was not isolated nor aberrant nor something that was only in his later years.”
Brierley initially faced 17 charges before he pleaded guilty earlier this year to three counts of possessing child abuse material earlier this year. The other charges against Brierley were withdrawn.

I’m not suggesting for one second that Ron Brierley was involved in a high level group of politicians, State Servants and Police to abuse children, what I’m saying is that IF such a group existed, powerful and rich men with a sexual interest in children would have been involved and if one wanted to test that theory, research who Brierley was associated with during the time these allegations were supposed to have happened.
That level of scrutiny should now be put on Anthony ‘Aussie’ Malcolm and any connection between him and Brierley.
A lot of children were abused in State Care and allegations of children being systematically abused for powerful people demands more scrutiny than it has been given.

The message Andrew Coster or his replacement and Christopher Luxon need to get is, an injury is required into police coverups and police failing sexual assault complainants whether in state care or not in state care. Those who have been harmed by the police and/or their mental health is being further impacted when the coverup involved a politician or a political matter of public importance needs to be the criteria or a term of reference for an inquiry.
We have had our lives further impacted and will continue to have our lives further impacted until the police allow us full acknowledgement of the hurt and pain top brass at NZ Police have inflicted against children and teens.
My goal is for an inquiry to be held asap.

Very disturbing that the gang of political pedophiles extended out from ACT into National.
Two outted, how many more to go? Whose on the potential list of associates? Why did the victims have NDAs? Sounds weird and illegal.
Whatever Malcom may or may not have been, conspiracy theorists also attribute pedophilia to past and present American Democrat politicians, King Charles’s social circle, Kim j Un etc. An organised Parliamentary pedophile group beggars belief, but nevertheless has to be investigated.

Rumours.
Rumour of pedophile rings was rife in Christchurch in 1990/91.
It is well to remember where that led with the metaphoric lynching of Peter Ellis and half a dozen innocent co-workers.
The problem with rumour is the same as konspiracy theory, they are impossible to permanently refute as they never supply evidence, only innuendo.
Approach such rumours of shadoeing “rings” with extreme cautiion.
Do not forget what Muldoon did to Moyle in 1976 and how the police thought it would be OK to overstep constitutionally interfering in a matter said in the House of Parliament. When it came to one of Muldoon’s ministers I would say that Muldoon would have been tipped off by the police and the matter would have been hushed up.
The full police evidence into Moyle has not been released by the police, it was ordered to be locked away for 25 years by North who headed the December 1976 inquiry. Wellington was a small place in 1975 and there would have been spy moles in the police who also tipped off Muldoon about any politician. Aussie Malcolm left politics in 1984 after 9 years.
My comment gives a snapshot into how then Burnside the commissioner of police in 1976 supported Muldoon the prime from 1975 – 1984 over a political matter and how Burnside said yes, yes, yes prime minister.
The only way any interference by police into a political matter (Moyle) and the covering up of how the police have failed to prosecute an alleged pedophile (Aussie Malcolm) is to hold an inquiry (and just not for children and teens who were in state care) into police failing children and teens due to police adding another layer of PTSD onto the initial cause of PTSD (sexual assault).
A big thank you to those children and teens who have come forward. I know how hard it is to deal with the police about their unacceptable historic behaviour. I have recently dealt with Integrity and conduct at NZ Police and I was shafted just like from 1979 – 2024.
Mosa the word state is open to interpretation. State agency harming you as a child or teen and just because you were not in state care it does not mean that the state e.g. the top brass at the office of the commissioner of police did not also cause you further distress and are callously not acknowledging it.
A good psychologist who is an expert in PTSD (based in Wellington) such as Ian de Terte who was a detective for 10 years in NZ police needs to go and hold a seminar with those at PNHQ who are making the wrong decisions when it comes to historical coverups.
Are the police also using coercive control like the perpetrator uses coercive control?
