  1. Thank goodness Christchurch Council is taking a position on this problem .The more they kill the better is will be .Their poo fouls the water and is unpleasant for those playing sport. A person leaving dog poo can get fined but Canadian Greese poo is often a larger amount plus they destroy grass and seeds so have a commercial cost .

  2. Sadly this is the result of a few people being allowed to import these birds in the mid 1970s for hunting purposes .Now like other introduced birds and animals they have become a destructive force through out the country .In future people wanting to do the same should have to put up a multi million dollar bond to cover the clean up once they become a pest .What a great country we would have if we had not imported so many animal and human pests .

  3. These comments, like a drunkard mistaking a basin for a urinal, are all totally missing the mark. AJP’s argument is not that the Canada Geese are native wildlife (they’re not), nor that no intervention is necessary (it is), but rather than there are better ways to intervene. Ways that are less cruel, less costly, and more effective.

What I suggest the AJP do is follow the money. Who are the contractors who will get paid to carry out this cull? What are their relationships (if any) to the sitting counsellors/ council officials resonsible for this decision? I suspect they’d find – as is so often the case in this tiny country – a nepotistic little circlejerk. Where those people are making arm’s length decisions that will enrich their mates, or even themselves, at the public expense. Even the most hardline ACT supporter or Taxpayers Onion Stan ought to be as shocked by this sort of thing as anyone on the left.
