  1. “After the hateful spite Trump has vomited up over the last 2 years – the fact he’s gained in the Senate and just lost the House by two dozen+ seats is a grim reminder that he does actually represent a dark America who will vote for him regardless of his carnival of the grotesque.”

Not so surprising. A student of history will see paeallels with the rise of the German Nazi party and their electoral successes in elections (before they eventually seized power and abolished the elections whuch put them into power.)

There will always be a sizeable segment of the populace that see “strong government” as desirable, especially when it panders to “tribal” urges such as Nationalism. Thats when things really get ugly in politics.

  2. If the Democrats can manage to pass their brain cell around without dropping it, they could support any piece of legislation, from either side, that serves their constituency and direction while blocking the divisive pieces. Including those brinkmanship budget approvals.

‘You play nice; we play nice. You play hard – we’ll block and talk and let our next level people, the grassroots and trustworthy activists know so they can keep people informed of the arcane moves in the House, and how we’re playing fair.”

A blanket block just increases rancour and schism.

Fingers crossed that Pelosi, Warren, Sanders and King can give a beneficial lead on this.

  3. Well written Martyn.
If it turns out to be the case…
I wonder how much of the middle class (if there is any left).
Will still like Trump when the tax cuts are reversed and they have even less support than they have now.

  4. Hmmph,

An analysis of the Trump’s future without a single mention of the name Bob Mueller.

    That figures.

    1. Normal people say Trump is the (insert nasty words here) problem. I say the CIA, FBI, NSA, DoJ have been running America and its reputation just fine with out Trump for 70 years.

So the markets will like the Mid Term result not because Dems flipped the house marginally, or Reps gain in Senate, but because it brings perceived “Stability” to the political climate. Plus there is a vacuum of potential newsflow between now & end of the year. Path of least resistance is up.

  5. Interesting how Republicans lost In the House of Representatives but gained in the Senare. Not surprising, as US voters often split their vote (as voters do here in NZ under MMP) to put a control over each party.

But it’ll certainly make Republican representatives think carefully about unquestioning fealty to the Orange Overlord. That kind of closeness to Trump has proved to be toxic.

  6. Then again – look at this ad by a ‘moderate’ Democrat.

What was proven more than anything was that Donald Trump knows how to get his base out: the Democratic establishment’s strategy was to turn moderate conservatives not to pull their base out. Much credit should be given to the grass roots progressive movement – some amazing catch-up and some great victories in the face of voter suppression.
