  1. The National Party’s epic failure on crime and law and order is stunning even for them.

Why not go the whole hog and tell the victims they are only victims because they dare to operate shops. What next National, you don’t want to get robbed then close your business? What a fucking embarrassment National are.

About the time when Crusher was the first Police Minister of a cast of many in the Key government they started slashing the budget, to pay for tax cuts.
    Then they cut even more.
    Then they froze the budget.
So the police management invented “Prevention” as a way of doing less with less. Preventing crime before it happens. Its cheap, it has no stats that can back it up because if you are preventing something that never happened then, well, it never happened, but it might of! And, without the staff and the logistics of a properly funded organisation it fails.

It usually takes criminals about 5 years tops, to work out that when the cat is starved and lying half dead on the floor from malnutrition the mice can live it up. And they are.

But who cares because those people running dairy’s have foreign sounding names. “Mikes minute” doesn’t care!

Tax cuts or no tax cuts and less crime.Take your pick NZ.

  2. Would the writer care to take a look at the current huge jackpots available to purchasers of Lotto tickets, while under this government most social sector groups like Parkinsons, Blind Foundation, Multiple Sclerosis etc have had large cuts in funding from lotteries, as well as govetnment? My devious mind says the huge jackpot prizes are deliberately engineered to have people conned by a fell good factor.

  3. As a long time non smoker, who did once smoke for a fair few years (not heavily), I consider, the Nats have turned tobacco into their drug to wage war against, they declared a war on tobacco. We must admit, that when in government, Labour did this also, albeit not as extremely as the Nat led government now, where prices have reached limits that make cigarettes as cherished a booty as perhaps P.

No wonder we get what we have, and like the US’ war on drugs in Latin America and so, the war on tobacco is being lost. Some have long discovered, you can grow your own and roll your own, so why bother.

Others are not that able to use land and resources to do just that, so they continue to seek their drug legally, or where possible illegally, on the black market for stole cigs.

So perhaps a rethink is needed. Cigarettes are hardly affordable, have not been for ages, and perhaps reduce the price a bit, so that those addicted to it, can at least afford them legally, they are already strictly controlled in retail, with age restrictions, plain packaging, with endless drives to discourage smoking.

Those fanatics that think we need a totally “smoke-free” nation and society are just like the teetotalers of past years, fanatics, tell them to take a hike, and get a life.

Any person still smoking is a loser as it is, but do not punish those already robbed to the extreme, and while reducing taxes on tobacco a bit again, the thieves and robbers may suddenly have less incentive to rob dairies and service stations.

  4. Answer’s easy. Make tobacco sales the exclusive business of specialist businesses. Defend them properly e.g. by only selling through letterboxes for cash.
