About The Daily Blog
The Daily Blog is Aotearoa’s largest collective of left-wing political commentators and progressive opinion shapers.
Launched on 1 March 2013, TheDailyBlog.co.nz was created to challenge the orthodoxies of mainstream media and to publish the stories, arguments, and perspectives that power would rather you didn’t hear.
Edited by Martyn Bradbury, The Daily Blog brings together more than twenty of the country’s most respected, disruptive, and uncompromising voices from across the left. Writers, academics, activists, unionists, commentators, and cultural critics — united by one belief: democracy only works when debate is honest, fearless, and accessible.
At a time when corporate media is shrinking, public-interest journalism is underfunded, and inequality continues to widen, The Daily Blog exists to fill the gap. We scrutinise political power, expose media bias, amplify marginalised voices, and provide rigorous analysis of New Zealand’s social, economic, and political landscape.
“Blogging and social media have become critical counterweights to mainstream media. When inequality is rising and democratic accountability is falling, it’s up to independent platforms to fortify dissent, sharpen debate, and hold the powerful to account. It’s hugely encouraging to see organised labour engaging directly in digital media. Unions understand the stakes — and they understand that public debate matters.”

New Zealand continues to face entrenched child poverty, insecure work, housing crises, and growing inequality. The erosion of strong public media has left a vacuum — and blogs like The Daily Blog exist to make sure that vacuum is not filled with silence.
The Daily Blog is proudly supported by UNITE Union, Rail and Maritime Transport Union, and the New Zealand Dairy Workers Union, alongside thousands of readers who support the site through direct donations.
Their backing reflects a shared commitment to economic justice, workers’ rights, and democratic engagement.
A chorus of dissenting voices.

Independent media doesn’t survive on clicks.
It survives on people who understand what’s at stake.
The Daily Blog exists to challenge power, interrogate media narratives, and give oxygen to voices that are too often sidelined or ignored. That work takes time, infrastructure, and editorial independence — and it can’t be sustained by corporate sponsorship or algorithm-chasing.
If you believe New Zealand needs:
- fearless political debate
- media that isn’t owned by billionaires
- journalism that serves the public, not advertisers
then supporting The Daily Blog is one of the simplest ways to help keep that space alive.
You don’t have to agree with every post.
You just have to believe that robust democracy requires dissent.
Supporting The Daily Blog isn’t charity.
It’s participation.
