Priests chain themselves to MP’s Auckland office over Gaza stance
An Anglican priest chained to MP Erica Stanford’s Auckland electorate office says they will stay there until they get an audience with the minister.
Philipa Young was one of four Christian clergy chained to the office as part of the group Common Grace Aotearoa, calling for clarity on when the Government will sanction Israel amid the conflict in Gaza.
Foreign Minister Winston Peters told the United Nations on Saturday New Zealand would not yet recognise a Palestinian state.
By refusing to recognise Palestine, this hard right Government have sided us with Genocide and war criminals.
We have a collective moral obligation to openly protest that despicable and immoral decision.
These priests who are chaining themselves to the Offices of right wing politicians who enabled this appalling obscenity is a reminder of what moral leadership looks like.
Our forebears died on foreign shores for democracy and freedom, NZ once had a proud tradition of standing for what is right, but by siding with the war criminals, by siding with genocide, this hard right Government have shamed and stained our collective mana beyond anything anyone else has ever done.
Rise Kiwi, rise against those who believe dropping bombs on tents, shooting children in the face and using hunger as a weapon is a proportionate response.
Show National, ACT and NZF the contempt they deserve.
Everything and everywhere is now the frontline against those 3 parties.

Real Christians have always been there and have been respected. Vast ‘mega churches’ full of evangelicals have failed that test. They are flashy and attract those who aspire to be flashy. Are they speaking out about the injustice they see around them?
Real old fashioned churches don’t try to be flashy and have missed out to their brash competitors, that’s true. Many people cannot see the difference, I know.
Real Christianity is humble and lives by it’s beliefs, not just in front of others on Sunday. Not our fault the right has been ensnared by illusions.

The left should judge Christians and Christianity on their merits. It should not succumb to blind prejudice. If the present events cause some on the left to take a more objective view of the place of religion in our society that will be no bad thing.

A friend made the comment “The wealth of the ruling class has not trickled down, but their moral depravity has”. I think he has a point. The ruling class, corrupt in itself, through its dominance of the media, the entertainment industry, higher education and many other areas, has succeeded in corrupting a large section of the working class. “P” has become the opiat of the masses and capitalism the perceived source of their salvation. In this social context authentic religious and spiritual values need to be reasserted.

Would you like to explain how sending firefighters to train civil defence workers becomes supporting ‘terrorist in Syria for the greater Israel project’ ? I mean, I know you’re foaming at the mouth to spin your anti-Israel agenda, but the handful of NZ firefighters who went to train volunteer Syrian search and rescue workers didn’t even set foot in Syria – they trained in Jordan and Turkey. Oh, and they were there to help the ‘people directly affected by the appalling conflict in Syria’. Nothing to do with Israel. But hey, I’m sure that detail doesn’t concern you. Did you know that Israel is responsible for global warming, too? And earthquakes. and the dents in the moon.
