Seven arrested at land occupation near Lake Rotokākahi

Seven people have been arrested after police moved in on a land occupation near Lake Rotokākahi in the Bay of Plenty.

Rotokākahi has been a site of controversy due to the Rotorua Lakes District Council’s planned Tarawera Sewerage Scheme. This scheme places a sewer line through a sacred site where over 100 tūpuna died during the Lake Tarawera eruption of 1886.

Mana i te whenua have disputed this decision since it was announced, and have taken several avenues to oppose it – including filing against the council in the Environment Court.

The number of police at the site differ. While protectors say there were over 100, police say there were around 80 between two shifts.

Get used to that image because the environmental catastrophe that is engulfing us will drive environmental activists to start protests against negative infrastructure that only feeds that climate change collapse, and the State will use greater and greater force.

There is a terrible gravity to where we are headed now.
