3% Inflation: How Electricity Privatisation and Killing Three Waters Blew Out NZ’s Cost of Living
New Zealand’s inflation didn’t rise by accident. It rose by design. The latest CPI figures expose exactly where the pressure is coming from — electricity prices and council rates — and why killing Three Waters and refusing to regulate privatised power was always going to end this way.
Higher electricity prices and local council rates to blame for 15-month high inflation increase
Inflation Hits 3% as Electricity Prices and Rates Surge
- The consumer price index (CPI) – the official measure of overall consumer prices – increased 3% in the 12 months to September, following a smaller 2.7% rise reported in the 12 months to June.
- The top three contributors to the 3% increase in the cost of living were electricity prices, local council rates and rents.
- Electricity prices and local council rates were the main contributors to the higher cost of living over the past year, figures released by Stats NZ show.
I just can’t stop laughing.
I. Just. Can’t. Stop. Fucking. Laughing.
Bhahahahahahahahahahahaha
What Three Waters Was Actually Designed to Prevent
You know what Three Waters was about?
It was about acknowledging Māori interests in water (as the Courts directed) and it was about ensuring Rates didn’t explode because of upgrades to the crumbling water infrastructure.
You had your petty ignorance manipulated by astro turf right wing groups into believing ‘da maaaareees is stealing da water’ and so it was scrapped and then you got fucked!
How dem apples rednecks?
Electricity Privatisation and the Cost of Living Crisis
Likewise the refusal to regulate the electricity market after Key privatised 49% of our hydro power.
How dem apples rednecks?
The Price of Right-Wing Economic Experiments
So your cost of living crisis is being exacerbated by right wing economic experiments and petty racism.
How. Dem. Apples. Rednecks?

The pakeha have stolen the water and now we are going to pollute it as fast as we can then charge 3x more for undrinkable boil first water .We done idiots .
You got what you voted for now we all have to feel the pain while more money leaves NZ along with another 70k workers and investors and tax payers .
Add the rising cost of insurance to the list. It’s now $80 and over a week for house insurance alone.
Yes Bonnie …the ‘Coalition of the the Chaotically Clueless Clusterfucks,’ and their sycophants, always leave out the fact that the inflation rate that rose under Labour was the side effect result of the one in one hundred year worldwide Covid pandemic…. that EVERY country suffered from…some went a lot higher than N.Z. ….NZ. managing to achieve one of the lowest death rates per capita of any country and save more businesses from going under……
How convenient for them to forget so easily …and quickly…mind you …none of them are the sharpest knives in the drawer.
I heard it again on the news tonight …mentioning how high inflation had gone under Labour …conveniently leaving out the extraordinary events surrounding the reason why . ….in effect lying by leaving out relative causal information.
Still…lying is what they do best….gotta give them that!

Potential stagflation. But the RBNZ are seeing an economy weak enough to bring inflation into band even as they cut rates into stimulatory territory. And they are looking 6 to 12 months ahead remember. The economy must be really bad. They are panicking. If the value of the NZ dollar drops because of the falling OCR that could add to tradeable inflation. So the RBNZ are going a bit over their ski’s on this one.
It isxa good job these unions were not looking for pay rise in 2022 or 2023 as we would need to find 7.17 percent in 22 or 5.7 percent in 23
Pay rates below the rate of inflation. No wonder this will be a one term government, The old National party ideology, roads, roads and more roads but nothing and I mean nothing for the people.
Without unions we’d have sycophants like Trevor ruining the country, oops we have that now, my bad.
Now how about another half a billion for those roads our trucking firm donors want?
More like announcements about roads … I’m yet to see them actually build one
You and your petty ignorance Trevor, oh and your very poor grasp on grammar. “isxa”
So since you’re so clever what was the inflation worldwide in those years? What other world wide event happened earlier as well? The coc have achieved the opposite of what they claimed they would do and your inability to accept that is not something to boast about.
Trevor you just got Munsoned by Bonnie.
