‘Increasingly volatile’: International economists think New Zealand politics is becoming more unstable

International economics firm BMI has upgraded New Zealand’s political volatility score, warning of the country’s “increasingly volatile” politics and that the Government’s cohesion was under “severe strain”.

BMI measures countries’ political risk using a Political Risk Index, which is designed to indicate whether a country has more or less volatile politics.

In mid-2023, New Zealand’s score on this index was 16. It rose to 18.3 in November of this year. The scores are out of 100, with 100 indicating a high level of political risk. This means that while New Zealand’s political risk has increased, the country is still viewed as stable.

…this Government’s anti-Māori, anti-Treaty, anti-worker, anti-renter, anti-disabled, anti-beneficiary and anti-environment agenda to cement into place 19th Century white settler privilege that strangles the common good for their donor’s interests is incredibly inflammatory.

Look at the abuse of power we are seeing right now ramming through controversial legislation by misusing urgency…

Too many laws passing without ‘proper scrutiny’, Geoffrey Palmer says

A former Labour Prime Minister says Parliament is passing too many laws without proper scrutiny.

Sir Geoffrey Palmer told Nine to Noon the government was increasingly pushing through legislation under urgency, which allowed it to skip stages such as public consultation and select committees.

…Since gaining power this Climate denying Government has done everything in its power to disrupt, destroy and obliterate all our environmental protections, Russel Norman over at Greenpeace has detailed every anti-environment legislation this Government have done over the last 2 years and it is jaw dropping…

Luxon’s War on Nature Timeline

When the Luxon-led coalition took office nearly two years ago, its war on nature started within days of taking office. In that time, the government has made a bewildering number of changes leading to environmental harm. Greenpeace Aotearoa Executive Director Russel Norman has undertaken the gargantuan task of tracking them all.

…National, ACT and NZF are captured by the big polluters and while the nation burns from climate change extreme weather events, you ZB Trolls and Redneck Crackers be jumping for joy because you hate Jacinda, trans and vaccines so much.

You are siding with the big polluters, with the intensive dairy farmers, with the Banks, with Big Oil because you despise admitting you were wrong on climate change and are so driven by social media hate algorithms you can’t acknowledge it.

Your petty bigotries won’t save you as the planet burns.

This is a climate denial Government and the sooner the rest of us turn on them and their redneck supporters, the sooner we can start preparing for the adaptation that is going to be required if we are to have any chance of surviving what is coming.

They are using culture war talking points to distract you from the furnace that is upon us.

A new level of militant environmental activism is coming.

We need mass civil disobedience protests.

Contrary to this I would argue that we are starting to see a ‘push back’ by some in the present govt against in particular the enforced Maorification of our entire society and in particular schools etc (latest emails from my kids (mainstream) primary school are so full of virtue-signaling pidgin English that they are now at the point where I am having to guess what it is they are trying to say).

    • Maybe you are just too sensitive to change? Provide the evidence or shut up as the present situation has me wondering if the school email is virtue-signaling or you are just thick.

    • Suggest, JB, that you look a little deeper to understand what is happening. Our young NZers are showing the way of our future. Us older, white folk have almost had their day.
I went to a public secondary school prizegiving recently – with a majority of pakeha pupils – and there were many presentations that began with what you call ‘pidgin English’ – Maori, I assume – and no less than ten spontaneous hakas performed with close to perfection.
And, as you have primary school children, you should be very aware of the climate change we witness every day somewhere in the would and think of their – and maybe your grandchildren’s – future
To not do so is the ultimate selfish action, JB. The evidence of climate change is voluminous – read it, if you have a conscience!

    • What does Maorification mean JB?? Is that a made-up word? What the ideology behind your thinking? How did your ancestor get here and what were the reasons behind their decision? Do you always want you and your children’s, children’s to be called a colonizing thieving scum sucking bottom-feeders? Or do you want a more inclusive ideology that the “Treaty of Waitangi” is our founding document and the beginning of our nation why your children, children exist in this country in the first place??

Show some fucken respect for your heritage JB

    • Good God! What drivel.
You’re right there has been a forcing of one culture over another here …. just the other way around to what you think. Hopefully your children learn more about the history of this country and and up better educated than you.

      • The only way you can be better educated than me is if you have a doctorate . . if we are going to review this purely from a university perspective.

        • OK “Doctor”…

If you’re so well educated, why do you flip out when you’re confronted by something you claim to struggle to understand?

I too have a doctorate and when I’m confronted by something I don’t understand I seek to do so.

Instead of acting like an incurious ignoramus you could use your phone to discover the intellectual and cultural resources of the world and enrich and empower yourself. You could even use the online maori dictionary to understand the first language of Aotearoa which is one of our two official languages.

But that’s too hard for Doctor Jimmy. He would rather role model a middle aged meltdown for his kids.

Do you have a doctorate in business perhaps?

    • James White (‘Ware rant under. How would you rate it – Best for day, week,….?)
How can you have that name of Brown when you seem to hate the word. Remember your education when you were supposed to be learning something? It’s time to start again for you and yours – learning about how we all live on a planet together, have been formed by biology over millenia, and closer to now were building a country rich in culture and food growing and and development of modern ideas and acceptance.

Now the one idea is to get money or financial assets and have things. It’s obvious that it ‘s childish when spelt out like that, but you know we have more brain than dogs and horses but they are more noble and able to live satisfactorily at their own level. We haven’t found our level for living together, but are developing destructive, individualistic tendencies. Let’s have Maorification, I think they would be better than having to put up with people like you destroying our country and way of life just so you can satisfy your pathetic human wants and in doing so use us and our resources serving people’s needs.

    • You’ve certainly staired up a hornets nest, JB, intentional or not. Contrary to what some may think, tangata whenua will always have a voice here. Arguably since the 70s they’ve reclaimed that voice big time – gaining momentum with the new millennium – and now its everywhere. Too loud for you? Time to find a new home perhaps.

What will our fair country be like in 50 years time? 100 years? 200 years? Not long really – if we all survive that long! The colonial legacy will no doubt live on but hard to see the demise of indigenous peoples here as there has been in other places. Language intact, new generations will will continue fly the flag amongst an increasingly diverse populace.

    • Of course you’re going to get a pendulum swing on this kind of thing.

Politicians like Rata, Palmer, Lange, Finlayson, Thorne grew up in an overtly racist NZ and took the nation on a journey, making a pretty good attempt to, “put things right because its the putting right that counts”, in terms of legality, land rights, economy, language and symbolism.

At this point on that journey pakeha are embracing more parts of maori culture all to the good.

Why is this occurring? Maybe its because NZ is one of the least rascist countries on the planet.*

  2. The people voted for it and the govt is delivering what they promised. They will highly likely win the next election as well.
Your civil disobedience would be against the wished of the majority.

  3. You frequently mention your children and how much you disagree with everything that happens at their school/schools. Why don’t you move them? Go to a charter school. Bound to be one near you.

I think your children might be quite surprised at what you write here actually. Possibly ashamed.

  4. “this Government’s anti-Māori, anti-Treaty, anti-worker, anti-renter, anti-disabled, anti-beneficiary and anti-environment agenda”

Please add ‘anti-egalitarian’ to this list.

  5. Have been trying to defend myself all day but most of my comments not being shown – have been on this blog literally every day for years but not any more.
    Enjoy your echo chamber.
