Wellington City Council admits ratepayer money is wasted in badly managed contracts, but doesn’t know how much

Poor oversight of contracts at Wellington City Council could be costing ratepayers tens of millions of dollars, but the council doesn’t know how much money it has wasted and won’t say if it plans to find out.

The revelation has been labelled “bitterly disappointing” by councillors and has prompted the Local Government Minister to call for action.

Findings of poor bookkeeping were among failings identified in a troubling independent report released last week, revealing the council was not tracking a majority of its contracts and was signing up to non-competitive agreements.

The Deloitte probe into the council’s operations said the council was overstaffed to the tune of 330 roles, and found widespread “non-compliance with procurement and contract management processes”.

Only 20% of contracts with external providers are tracked in the council’s contract management system, and correct processes for procurement are often bypassed, it stated.

The Atlas Network adjacent Taxpayers’ Union is one of the most important right win astro turf influencers in NZ Politics.

They are the mouthpiece of venal; corporate interests and with Atlas Network help, construct masterful campaigns fuelled by dark money to manipulate and twist petty bigotries into corporate interests.

Their current shock attack on local councils is hilarious when you consider the reason rates are going top is because the right wing government have shifted those costs to them.

The trouble is that Councils like Wellington provide Taxpayers’ Union with all the political ammunition they need because Wellington Council is so fucking dysfunctional.

Is Wellington Council secretly working for the Taxpayers’ Union?

How they seem to have managed to lose track of tens of millions of dollars in contracts is Absolutely Positively Wellington.

Of course Council’s shouldn’t be run like a business, they provide a pub lic service for universal infrastructure, but you can see why Rates Caps are popular when the example is Wellington.

The woke who run Wellington politics have so much to answer for.

  1. Don’t worry, it’ll be alright, because “the woke who run Wellington politics. . . “ are slowly migrating to national politics.
