Oranga Tamariki officials have admitted some youth are being held in highly restrictive, secure units for longer than allowed under the law, partly due to a lack of training of staff.
A secure unit is a highly restrictive space with a bedroom and other living areas where young people at youth justice or care facilities are often put when they are a risk to themselves or others.
By law, they can be held in this units for up to three days. After that, staff are required to get an formal โextensionโ from the courts.
However, in response to questions from Labourโs spokeswoman for children Willow-Jean Prime during a parliamentary select committee, Oranga Tamariki admitted sometimes young people are held longer without staff obtaining the appropriate extension.

Ministry signals another boot camp could be around the corner for young offenders
The Children’s Ministry has signalled it may run another boot camp for young offenders before a law change kicks in next year.
Legislation is before Parliament to give judges the sentencing option of a military-style academy for the first time for repeat serious offenders.
The first pilot boot camp last year was with volunteers.

The reason National/ACT and NZF insist on calling them Military Boot Camps is because National, ACT and NZF voters hate young people and they want those who cause crime to be punished and made to suffer.
They vote to ensure young people they hate are given the bash.

Nothing excites their reactionary voter base more than the thought of kids they are fearful of being punished in a Military Boot Camp.
Oranga Tamariki donโt like the term because after the Royal Inquiry into Historic Abuse, the previous Military Boot Camps were full of kids who were being abused and they donโt want to be tainted with their resurrection (and they donโt want to the held legally culpable).
So you see, โsucceedingโ or โfailingโ isnโt the point of the Military Boot Camps, they make right wing redneck voters slather with glee and for National/ACT and NZF that is the win.

After years of Labour decimation of the armed forces they are 3000 short of the number needed to function. It has been suggested the country returns to conscription which was stopped in 1972. Serving in a medical or service section could be there for those not wanting to join a fighting force.
