Somebody was always going to pay for the huge backlog of delayed water infrastructure.
And there were only three options: today’s ratepayers, future water users (thru charges), or future ratepayers (thru repaying water entity or council borrowing).
It’s great that the taxpayer is not on the hook to bail-out the feckless councils (like Wellington) that never invested in their own infra.

Yes Wellington councils didn’t invest in pipes but how far back do we go to lay the blame. This is not the first time our elderly haven’t been able to afford their rates this has happened before in Karori.
The current government is over controlling they want to privatize water and other essential utilities that we need to keep in public hands. Too many New Zealanders jumped at the tax cuts yet they gave with one hand and took more with the other. People need to wise the fuck up and stop thinking of themselves as short term ill thought out solutions are hurting too many people.
