Over 35,000 Christmas Boxes packed this year as Kiwis struggle with cost of living
A record number of Christmas Boxes have been packed this year with about 2500 volunteers packing more than 35,000 boxes for the charity initiative.
Each Christmas Box has $70 worth of food and can feed a family of four to six.
Head of Community Response Rebecca So’e said Christmas was supposed to be about celebration, but it puts some families under more pressure to figure out how they’re going to pay for the presents and treats that most families have during the Christmas season.
She said this year had been even tougher than last year for people in the communities they work in.
I think this year there will be 2 very different kinds of Christmas in NZ.
The wealthiest 25% of the country will kick up their heels at surviving 2025 and celebrating like the recession is ‘over’…
Pop the bubbly, the economic recovery is here (finally) – Liam Dann
…then there will be the other 75% who are hurting economically in a way they haven’t before just trying to hold on by their fingernails…
Cost of living crisis: More than half a million people rely on food charity each month
…but don’t you fret if you are out Christmas shopping, the Prime Minister is kindly looking at new powers to arrest the homeless that his policies are creating so you don’t have to feel any shame while you are being a consumer…
Prime Minister Luxon confirms action plan on ‘move-on’ orders for homeless, announcement soon
…this is what we is now.
This is who we have become.
Merry Christmas.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

dumb fucks, you dont even need to celebrate xmas its just another day yet ppl waste thousands of dollars they dont have on useless gifts and food
That’s right! “Work, buy, consume, die’ … (repeat mantra ad infinitum)
saymore Don’t waste your words and time on us all, thanks we can do without your reductive gifts.
Nonsense. Christmas is the best holiday of the year. I put the X-Mas tree up this morning with my niece, gotr all the X-Mas bangers playing in the background. I won’t spend a cent, but to say the holiday itself isn’t a valuable time of year just shows you have no soul.
China has no homelessness and its a communist country unlike NZ a western democratic civilization that has plenty of wealth and a small population go figure!?
Yes, but they don’t protect the Tim Jagos of the world.
So who can say what is better?
China has no homelessness because the party says they don’t exist.
They do exist, and like most Asia countries, are hidden. One example of this is putting the homeless into Administrative Detention. So please don’t think Communism with Chinese features has solved the issue of homelessness, because they have not. China has all the problems of rapid urbanization and mental health everyone else does. They also lack many of the basic social supports to deal with the issue.
Not to down play how shit it is here. We need to accept that Greed has been the biggest driver of homelessness here in NZ. We will never fix homelessness, but the levels we have now are by design. We should not have this many homeless. It is an economic choice by our masters.
There will be at least four different scenarios for Christmas 2025 in NZ: [1] for the “sorted”; [2] for the “needy”; [3] for those sick/in hospital or similar, and [4] those “living” on the street. For you, will there be shelter, good food, love, support, peace, security, even presents? NZ was once a truly “giving” bunch of caring, kind souls. Sadly there is now an abundance of “takers” [bludgers]. Yes I bang on about givers and takers, so it’s important you realise, not pick, which one you are and if the latter, then take a long hard look in the mirror and actually see who you have become. Horrible is it? Luckily you can change, but you have to want to be a better, more caring person – can you do that? It isn’t that difficult – how about you try it!
What changed non-boomer NZers into the ‘takers’ you assert they became was watching the boomers block building new houses so their own houses got more valuable and rents skyrocketed, and also their cutting back the state’s generosity for everyone else (student loans/means testing working age benefits, etc), but never, ever touching NZ Super’s age or rate.
Meanwhile another right wing politician’s corruption emerges. Oh the irony of the conflict of interest.

If Chris Hipkins had a moral bone in his body, he would be promising not just a day 1 repeal of everything the Luxon regime has done, but a reversal that makes it as if their laws were never passed.
In the case of pay parity law, that would mean reverting to the less sexist pay parity law, immediately restoring all active cases at the time the freak van Velden eliminated it, and treating those cases as if they had proceeded in the most positive way for the intervening period.
In the cast of Hoggard, he needs to go in a hog crate for AT LEAST three years.
Over 300 million homeless in China ? Not visible in the major urban areas due the Government relocating them out to more rural areas where tourists don’t go.
What are their names BTF? If they relocate them to rural houses, then they aren’t homeless, are they?
Have you considered not smoking crack?
What a stupid reply Steve.
MK’s comment is O.K. then?
Not familiar with the word “crack “ in that context T Pro.
Reminds me of the lines from musical Hair. What a piece of work is man, how noble his reason. Taken from Shakespeare I think. He could think it then 16th century? – now we are going backwards, squabble like schoolkids.

As for approaching Christmas, this on Black Friday sales in USA. 12m of confusion about their usa economy – fascinating from Big A. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFUvoISrsGA
Why is it that Christmas time is the only time the left want to celebrate Christianity! When they can use it to once again plead how poor NZers apparently are when they can’t afford thousands of dollars of junk toys for their families of 13.
