WAATEA NEWS COLUMN: Why Māori Party re-set matters

If you are a Labour, Green or te Pati Māori voter, the reset by the Māori Party is the most important political pivot this year.
One criticism of the current te Pati Māori is that they are simply a protest movement of activists who use Parliament as a backdrop for political theatre and have little interest in being an actual participant in any Government.
There has been a sense that they are only interested in Pure Temple politics that refuse to compromise on anything.
That is why their ‘re-set’ matters so much.
For the first time, te Pati Māori have stated that they do want to constructively work with the Greens and Labour to remove this Government while acknowledging they will have to compromise to achieve that.
This is an enormous step up by the Māori Party Leadership who see the Government is the problem, not the other Opposition Parties.
For voters who are suffering under this terrible Government, this is great news and a real chance to gain the 51% necessary to win in next years election.
Certainly, there are still internal challenges for te Pati Māori, but the criticisms by Eru sound a lot more hollow after the late night email release.
The wider left who want a better Government need to stop seeing each other as the enemy and start working together for the 2026 election.

  1. It’s the transition from rebellion against a government to assuming the same government roles that makes students of Sun Tsu so hated.

This post Martyn sets out the reality I believe about TPM, and explains much of what they have done. Boldness be my friend has been their motto I think and they have got the attention they sought. They have drawn reaction and reaction good to bring out for observation and understandiang, now the behind-scenes moves have to be watched for.

Restraint and commitment to the kaupapa, and the way of movement towards it has to be plotted and planned for, not a matter of brainfarts and eruptions. Appropriate language room being cool and proud could be the watchwords. Now is the time for all good Maori to come to the Party that will take us all forward.

Let’s all sing and work together those who have hearts, minds, respect and vision for similar outcomes and keep them honed in tune with each other.
