PSNA says the ‘complexity’ excuse for cabinet inaction on Palestine this morning is a cowards’ way out for the government to avoid even the most tepid policy to oppose Israeli genocide in Gaza.
Prime Minister, Chris Luxon, said this morning that cabinet today would not be making decisions on recognition of Palestine for Foreign Minister, Winston Peters to take to the United Nations General Assembly next week.
Luxon said recognition of Palestine was ‘complex’ and government decisions were still weeks away.
Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa Co-chair, John Minto, says the government recognised Palestine at the United Nations in 1947.
“It’s taken nearly 80 years to work out ways to make that real and it still can’t do it.”
“Peters needed very clear and strong instructions to take to the UN, where he could have joined the calls for the growing list of sanctions to be imposed on Israel.”
“In just over two days last week, Israel demolished fifty of the tallest residential tower blocks in Gaza City. That’s a rate of destruction of more than one every hour and thousands more people made homeless.”
“There’s nothing about defending borders, or implementing a strategy of getting hostages released in all of this barbarous onslaught by Israel. It’s self-declared ethnic cleansing.”
“At the same time, Israel has tried to kill the Hamas negotiations team by bombing them in Qatar. New Zealand has declared that the issues can only be resolved through negotiations, but has said not one word of complaint that Israel is murdering the negotiators.”
Minto says there is a yawning gap between the government’s policy towards Russia and that towards Israel.
“Winston Peters has just implemented its thirty-second sanction measure against Russia.”
“That does not seem to be complex.”

So typical of our weak, cowardly PM, one leg each way. He will never ever lead by example or show any fortitude or leadership, just continue to make excuses. Why does he bother to front – it’s so damn embarrassing. He must know his time is up but doesn’t even have the guts to fall on his sword. Much in life is complex but not insurmountable. How can Israel be in the right when human beings are being slaughtered / butchered on a daily basis? It’s obscene and so are those supporting this atrocity! Netanyahu should be hung from the gallows.
This article really highlights the governments hypocrisy. Its frustrating to see them claim complexity while ignoring the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Mintos words are powerful and demand action.
The sick weirdos running this government are a deep embarrassment to all kiwis who possess a spine.
And you think we should read the American Jewish Committees take on the situation. Get a grip Gaby. We can see it every day on Al Jazeera!
In October 2023, instead of entering negotiations for the return of the hostages, Israeli leader Yoav Galant said we will cut off all food, water electricity, every thing is shut.
Instead of entering negotiations for the return of the hostages, Israel immediately began carpet bombing Gaza city killing a number hostages including the Bibas family. And then ten days later launching an all out ground invasions killing even more Israeli hostages as they begged for their lives in Hebrew.
Followed by the bombing of hospitals, schools, mosques, churches, universities, and 80% of residential buildings, bombing of shopping centres, food markets, water and sewerage treatment plants, destroying green houses, market gardens, farmland, blockading outside humanitarian medical and food aid, the targetted murder of journalists and health professionals.
The systematic targetting of children by Israeli snipers, who turned it into a game, one week shooting children in the head, the next week shooting children in the genitals.
‘GENOCIDE’ there is no other word for it.
Genocide;
‘We will not respond to this’
Is the Government and Labour Party position
Chris Hipkins says the Labour Party will only respond when a legal ruling is made.
(This is the same position held by Lynn Prentice the editor of the Labour Party Blogsite The Standard, which banned me for challenging anonymous genocide denier SPC, who claimed that it is not genocide because the IDF issue warnings to the population to leave before they go in and slaughter all the men, women and children who didn’t, or couldn’t heed the IDF warnings to leave.)
The Labour Party and the government’s position on the genocide in Gaza is an exact cut and paste copy of the British Labour Party and Labour government’s position on the genocide in Gaza.
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/sep/17/un-report-israel-genocide-gaza-western-governments
……Keir Starmer’s government has previously said it cannot talk of genocide until “a competent court” (in other words, the ICJ) has given its final judgment. The commission’s findings make clear that line is wholly unsustainable for the prime minister formerly known as a human rights lawyer. “Prevention of genocide” is – as Starmer well knows – a key element of the 1948 genocide convention; the president of the International Association of Genocide Scholars is one of many who have pointed out that states are already failing in that regard.
UN body determines that genocide is being committed in Gaza.
Winston Peters says, “It is not a legal ruling. We will not be responding to this”.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/world-news/360827346/un-inquiry-declares-israel-committing-genocide-gaza
Winston Peters and the Government position is the same as Chris Hipkins and the Labour Party position, and the editorial position of The Standard. As John Minto says in the heading of this post; “it’s a ‘cowards’ way out’.
Peters, Hipkins and Prentice are aware, (just as Starmer is,) that the genocide convention obligates us to act to PREVENT genocide.
You can’t prevent a genocide after it has happened.
Peters, Hipkins, Prentice and Starmer are genocide deniers in words, and arguably supporters of genocide in practice.
Peters, Hipkins, Prentice and Starmer are fully aware that you can’t prevent a genocide after it has happened.
Experts on the workings of the ICJ say that the IDF genocidal campaign against the Gazans will have likely have fully played out, before the ICJ releases it’s determination, sometime in late 2026 if not later.
The wikipedia page on the genocide in Gaza, makes harrowing reading.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_genocide
EU members Ireland and Spain have officially declared that genocide is being committed in Gaza and are responding to it. South Africa has also officially declared that genocide is being committed in Gaza.
Alongside South Africa these nations, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, Morocco, Malaysia, Turkey, Jordan, Bolivia, The Maldives, Namibia, Pakistan, Colombia, Brazil, have filed cases in support of South Africa’s case against Israel for committing genocide.
Peters, Hipkins, Prentice and Starmer continue to hide behind a legal figleaf that the ICJ has not yet made their determination.
This is no excuse for them to continue to deny that genocide is being committed in Gaza.
So what is truely behind Hipkins Peters and Prentice denial that genocide is being committed in Gaza?
And will our journalists and our legal experts be putting these questions to them?
Or will we have to wait to the genocide is over before we can hold these people to account?
The US sends a clear message to the world.

Beginning @0:00 minutes:
The Security Council will now begin its consideration of item two of the agenda.
Members of the Council have before them documents SL202583.
The text of the draft resolution submitted by;
Algeria,
Denmark,
Greece,
Guyana,
Pakistan,
Panama,
Republic of Korea,
Sierra Leon,
Slovenia,
Somalia.
The council is ready to proceed to the vote on the draft resolution before it.
I now give the floor to those members of the council who wish to make statements before the vote.
I give the floor to the representative of Denmark.
Thank you, Mr. President;
I have the honor to deliver this statement on behalf of the 10 elected members of the Security Council, namely
Algeria, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leon, Slovenia, Somalia, and my own country Denmark.
Mr. President;
As elected members, we represent every region of the world.
Importantly, we represent the will and the expectations of the members of the General Assembly, by whom we were elected.
In electing us, they entrusted us with the solemn responsibility to maintain international peace and security.
It is in this spirit and with this grave responsibility in mind, that we collectively and resolutely present today’s resolution.
Mr. President;
Famine has been confirmed in Gaza. Not projected, not declared, confirmed.
Desperate mothers are forced to boil leaves to feed their children. Fathers search the rubble for sustenance. People are killed as they try to get food to survive.
A generation risks being lost not only to war, but to hunger and despair.
Meanwhile, Israel has expanded its military operation in Gaza City, further deepening the suffering of civilians.
As a result, it is this catastrophic situation, this humanitarian and human failure that has compelled us to act today.
Mr. President;
Today we will take action on an important resolution. It focuses on three urgent and immediate demands. Demands that many member states have made time and time again.
No more and no less.
First, an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, respected by all parties.
Second, the immediate, dignified, and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups.
Third, that the government of Israel immediately and unconditionally lifts all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza and ensures its safe and unhindered distribution to the population in need of such assistance. in line with international humanitarian law.
Mr. President;
This is the product of weeks of consultations.
The sole intent of this resolution is to ease suffering, and contribute to the end of this abhorrent war.
So colleagues;
Let this resolution send a clear message.
A message that the Security Council is not turning its back on starving civilians, on the hostages, and the demand for a ceasefire.
Let it say, that we support humanitarian workers and health personnel, struggling against impossible odds, that when a war is live streamed around the world daily, and in graphic detail, we have the decency to act, that international law matters, that humanitarian principles matter, that the principles of humanity inscribed in the UN Charter guide us.
Mr. President;
We, the elected members of the Security Council, call on all Council members to vote in favor of this resolution and to uphold this Council’s responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.
I thank you.
I thank the representative of Denmark for their statement. I now give the floor to the representative of the United States.
Thank you, Mr. President;
……the United States of America will vote against the draft resolution and urges delegations to join us in voting against it.
I thank the representative of the United States for their statement;
I shall put the draft resolution to the vote, now.
Will those in favor of the draft resolution contained in document SL20258 please raise their hand.
[without hesitation, every single permanent representative member of the Security Council hand shoots straight up. Except that is for the representative of the permanent member of the Security Council the United States, who tightly laces her fingers firmly on the desk]
Those against!
[the representative of the United States is the sole Security Council member to raise their hand]
There are no abstensions.
The result of the voting, is as follows;
14 votes in favor,
One vote against,
Zero abstensions.
The draft resolution has not been adopted, owing to the negative vote of a permanent member of the Council.
>The US sends a clear message to the world.
>All the US arse lickers in this country get the message.
Nowhere in the Genocide Convention does it say that states have to wait for an outside body to declare a genocide. The Genocide Convention obligates all states to act to prevent genocide, even states that are not signatories to the convention are obligated by international law to prevent genocide.

Beginning @12:05 minutes:
I now give the floor to those members of the council who wish to make a statement after the vote.
I give the floor to the representative of Algeria.
Beginning @18:52 minutes:
Today 14 courageous members of this Security Council raised their voice.
They have acted with conscience echoing the calls of the international public opinion.
Palestinian sisters, Palestinian brothers, be assured we will not give up. This is not the last time.
This council is acting, and the international community must shoulder its duty.
President again this council has failed.
Another scar on the conscience of humanity.
Shame.
Shame on helplessness.
Shame in the face of genocide.
Genocide unfolding before our eyes. And to those who still deny it, read the report.
Read the report of the Independent Commission of Inquiry.
Its words are clear, and I quote;
“The commission concludes that the state of Israel bears responsibility for the failure to prevent genocide, the commission of genocide, and the failure to punish genocide against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.”
This council has already failed twice, failed twice in preventing genocide.
Today it appears we are on the verge of witnessing, a third failure.
And at this moment, there can be no ambiguity.
Each of us must choose either to act to stop the genocide, or to be counted among those who were complicit….
Don’t let us be complicit in genocide.
Don’t believe the cowards and liars, the genocide deniers, nations don’t need the Security Council or the ICJ to declare a genocide to stop them taking action to prevent genocide. The Genocide Convention itself empowers states and governments to act to prevent the crime of genocide.
