Doc’s ‘Māori Only’ sectarianism wins Māori Party battle but could cost the Left Election War – what does Chippy do?

Put the Bong Down and come out with your hands up - we have pizzas

Doc Ferris’s late night sectarian rants that go from ‘Māori First’ to ‘Māori Only’ has dealt a body blow to hopes of a Labour/Māori Party alliance going into the 2026 election.

It’s not completely closed, but the inability of the Leadership to reign him in is terribly destabilising.

If they can settle this in a week and have Doc apologise, there is maybe a chance, but Doc has managed to give National, ACT and NZF so much political ammunition Labour may have little choice but to inoculate themselves.

I would not be surprised if Labour actually rule out the Māori Party being in Cabinet with them before the end of the year.

That doesn’t mean that they can’t negotiate a deal with policy and Ministers outside Cabinet, but Labour simply can’t agree with the sectarian anti-migrant values Doc is pushing and his defence that the English language is a force for colonialism so you shouldn’t be offended by his use of the English language is what I call a 3 Bong Philosophy in that it takes 3 hits of the bong to sound like a great idea.

He’s effectively arguing that if he’s driving a car and he hits your dog with his car, you shouldn’t blame him for hitting your dog, you should blame the designer of the car?

Cool story bro, but bat shit crazy.

You can’t claim Labour’s use of migrant and pakeha Kiwis to volunteer for Peeni is strangling off the Māori voice BECAUSE PEENI IS MĀORI!

This purity test by the Māori Party is pure temple politics when we need broad class based solidarity.

The cultural sectarianism Doc is preaching is the kiss of death in NZ politics.

Labour will have to battle with National, ACT and NZF making Docs rants and posts their bloody election adverts for Christ’s sake!

Chippy may well be forced to inoculate Labour by simply ruling Māori Party out from being in Cabinet.

There are other strategies to use MMP with the Greens that can win the Māori Party the leverage we all need them to have to enforce real economic transformation, and I hope they can look to that as a means forward rather than further needless self mutilation.

This was a bad week in progressive politics for NZ, the Māori Party have managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

  1. Let us compare current news stories:
Takuta Ferris has a silly, racist rant caused through angry frustration.
Carl Bates failed to declare his assets and then pretended to be one of his own supporters.
Stuart Nash states that women are defined by their breasts and genitals.
Winston Peters reverses his position concerning land ownership by foreigners.
David Seymour uses social media to make personal attacks on critics of his proposed legislation.
I say no more. You decide which is more dangerous.

  2. For the left wing to be affected by Hipkins being a pansy, Hipkins would have to do something left wing- which sounds highly unlikely given how many decades he’s gone as an extreme neoliberal.

  3. Had this been a white man ranting in this racist fashion, his feet would not touch the ground on the way out the door. Why does he not get the same treatment and why the excuse making?

  4. Good round up Stevie. The problem with Ferris is that he is creating a poisonous spike in the works creating division in the left where we need unity. He is supposed to be intelligent but he is behaving like Trump. This wouldn’t matter at another point in time but it really matters now in the current political climate where the Left absolutely has to win in the next election. He is a selfish little no brain fanatic that doesn’t seem to care about bringing people together, only in his own foolish fanatical beliefs, which are lobbed like flash bangs to illuminate only himself. Idiots like him don’t matter in better times but they really matter at times like we have right now. Destructive and destabilising politicians like him need to be told to shut the fuck up by his leaders.

  5. Yes, Stevie and that is precisely why the mainstream media were not allowed to do any interviews after the by-election re- Orini Kaipara they (the media) were criticising her lack of knowledge on policy, yet they don’t do this to the CoC Ministers many who have no experience in politics or any policy background or qualifications either.

  7. I think TPM have hit upon an effective sinecure stream – by being constantly provocative, not to mention racist, they resonate strongly with their aggrieved base, being difficult to beat in their seats, but never being expected to deliver anything beyond rhetoric. They are playing what we might call “Winston’s Game.”
