Wow…
In direct defiance of his co-leaders, Te Pāti Māori MP Tākuta Ferris is doubling down on his criticism of non-Māori people supporting Labour’s Peeni Henare’s by-election campaign.
Ferris defended and repeated his comments during an unusual eight minute video he uploaded to social media at around midnight.
Ahead of the Tāmaki Makaurau by-election, which was held last Saturday, Ferris said it was mind blowing to see “Indians, Asians, Black and Pākehā” supporting Labour’s Peeni Henare. He said those non-Māori supporters were “campaigning to take a Māori seat from Māori”.
Te Pāti Māori leadership originally told Ferris to take down the original by-election post.
“Te Pāti Māori does not condone the language used in that post. We have spoken with Tākuta and instructed him to remove it. We wholeheartedly apologise for any hurt it has caused,” the party said, last week.
But then on Tuesday night, Ferris said he had nothing to apologise for. And he repeated the same comments his party apologised for, and which Labour and others called “racist”.
“This just blows my mind that they’ve got all these ethnic people in this post campaigning in a by-election for a Māori seat. So you got all these other ethnicities campaigning for Labour to take a Māori seat from the Māori people.
“Straight up e te iwi, this should be unacceptable to us,” Ferris said in the nearly eight minute long video.
…ummmmm.
What’s up Doc?
I think Comrade Ferris watched The Bradbury Group last night and he didn’t react well to it.
Comrade Ferris is a good man, who is having a very, very, very bad day.
Doc’s post on the ethnicities of Labour’s volunteers gave Sean Plunket, Mike Hosking, David Seymour, Don Brash, Winston Peters and Heather Du Plissie Allan all the political ammunition they can desire to paint te Parti Māori out as sectarian and impossible for Labour to be in Government with.
Doubling down on this sectarianism is politically dangerous and emotionally bankrupt.
Ferris the attacks Willie Jackson…
But Ferris hit back at Jackson directly during the video.
“Guess what, Willie. I don’t give a crap who you care about or what you care about. In the Māori seats, it’s about the Māori people, Māori only,” he said.
…wtf?
During this By-election Māori Party activists called Willie Jackson a Colonized traitor! During his time in Government, Willie Jackson secured $3billion in Māori specific development, an amount larger than any other Māori Politician ever – if Willie Jackson’s ‘Māoriness’ fails the Māori Party purity test – what hope for a change of Government?
Allowing Ferris to push this narrative is incredibly counter productive.
I like Doc, he’s a smart and clever thinker and this commentary from his is beneath the mana of the moment, the people he’s attacking and the dignity of the te Parti Māori itself.
I think Doc needs a cup of tea and a lie down.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

Arrogance on his part. Does that mean he won’t want his billboard on our fence next year. He was comfortable having up there last year – we a white couple – I a member of TPM!
Ferris showing his inexperience best to keep these views to yourself and he is giving the red neckers ammunition
Maori fighting for scraps like our land meetings ‘whanau pitted against whanau’ for the little bits left ova land and that land is undevelopable as the good land now belongs in pakeha title. Whether Ferris pushes these bigoted memes or not TPM will always be targeted by Sean Plunket, Mike Hosking, David Seymour, Don Brash, Winston Peters and Heather Du Plissie Allan & co because they’re a threat to the Mega wealthy who finances these shills
Tākuta Ferris can’t have got the panui
HONE HARAWIRA:
“The reality is that this government is focused on the destruction of Māori, absolute destruction of Māori whānau, Māori language, Māori kaupapa, Māori economic development, Māori environmental policies, Māori anything……”
“……There’s an understanding that we can hold this and if we work with the others, we can be part of a government in 2026.
So my whole view is: stop taking shots at one another, stop saying my policy is better than yours. Start understanding that strategically, there are either the three of them at the table or there’s nothing.”

Don’t drink/smoke or be mentally hyper and post is a good rule of thumb.
Ferris has a bit of a screw loose on Māori seats, they actually exist within the Colonial parliamentary structures, they are not Tino Rangatiratanga in any shape.
Ferris is the ugly unapologetic face of the radical Maori separatist movement. Tolerate him at your peril.
Maybe the Daily Blog has a role to play in repairing some of the damage, by live streaming Oriini Kaipara’s maden speech. It’s going to be amazing, and a showcase of the best of Maori Whaikōrero!
(and not the slightest bit sectarian).

Yeah he is being a real idiot, he needs to be disciplined by the leadership of TPM. At this point could call him a fanatic. Tooooo bad that is the last thing anyone on the Left needs right now. Take a leaf out of Efesso’s book.

Let me explain —
Some people get worse when you give them sympathy for their trauma. That’s why I’m so good.
I’m a fan of TPM, but Takuta is totally out of line here! He’s also put the party in a shitty situation after they already put out an apology on his behalf, Rawiri and Debbie need to sort him out and ASAP.
We should be putting forward a united front on the left ahead of the election next year and this shit isn’t going to help.
Agree. I support TPM too.
Takuta seems to have missed an important point-the multi ethnic Labour team were supporting a MĀORI candidate, as they were bound to do in a Māori seat!
TPM has some “Tangata Tiriti” supporters as encouraged by co leader Debbie, Mr Ferris needs lining up before they feel unwelcome. Left unity is what it will take to win the 2026 Election.
