PSNA is shocked to see New Zealand’s backward slide in foreign policy continue this morning with Winston Peters’ name missing from a letter signed by 21 foreign ministerscondemning Israel’s approval for a new illegal Israel settlement in the occupied West Bank of Palestine.
The 21 foreign ministers who signed the letter include those we like to compare ourselves to and include the foreign ministers from three of the so-called “five eyes” countries – Australian, Canada and the UK – but not New Zealand! (The 21 foreign ministers who signed the letter are: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom)
“Winston Peters’ shock omission from this letter represents another dramatic backward shift in foreign policy” says PSNA Co-Chair John Minto. “While the world is outraged at Israel’s deliberate attempt to “bury” the two-state solution by splitting the occupied West Bank in two, Winston Peters is nowhere to be seen”
In the past New Zealand has spoken out strongly condemning illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian Territories and in 2016, under a National-led government, New Zealand co-sponsored United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 which said Israeli settlements had “no legal validity” and constituted “a flagrant violation under international law”.
But instead of signing the letter, Winston Peters was cosying up to Israel’s chief genocide enabler, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a phone call.
“The situation for our foreign policy is now dire. We are the shame of so-called liberal democracies”
Christopher Luxon has contracted out foreign affairs to the most reactionary section of his coalition government and Winston Peters is enacting policy for the 6% who voted for him at the last election.
The PSNA opinion poll last month showed strong popular support for sanctions against Israel but also showed a majority of New Zealand First supporters don’t want sanctions.

Winston has forced our country into full support of “Project 2025” an America policy paper design by the “Heritage Foundation” that V.P Vance & Rubio is deeply associated with. The policy paper speaks heavily against (PRC) who they keep labelling (CCP) a more derogatory term which I noticed on ‘Stuff’ reporting yesterday about China.
The Policy paper also talks about promoting “White Nationalism” feature of colonialism that New Zealand, USA, apartheid Israel have in common. Winston has always been an ardent supporter of the apartheid state he and his former minister have shaken hands with war criminals like Moshe Yalon.

C’mon, our foreign policy is determined by the USA, much like every other Western democracy! Best we can do is placate – fiddle around the edges – but challenge core US policy head on, not on your life. Lets not be blaming a minority when it is the USA that is the central problem here.
It is an outrage that the USA holds so much power of the New Zealand goverment. And its an outrage that big money interests runs the US goverment.

A shock perhaps but not a surprise. I can understand why people are so enamoured by an old short self-puffed-up bullshit artist. We have to assume that the position of Winston Peters as Foreign Minister is the position of the coalition as a whole. However there can be no denying New Zealand First Party is the most extreme, craven and corrupt expression of colonialist politics in the New Zealand system. The ACT Party hardly comes close to New Zealand First. What a change this represents from the heady days of 1993 when Peters appeared to be taking the side of New Zealand nationalism against the neo-liberal globalist ideology (itself an explicit expression of colonialism) which had fully taken over both the National Party and the New Zealand Labour Party. At that time we knew that Peters had strong colonialist connections. We knew he had been given the name “Winston” for a reason. But we believed his avowed commitment to the interests of our nation and our people meant something. We believed that that over time he would transition away from his colonialist roots. We were mistaken. We were not just mistaken with respect to Peters personally, but also with respect to the capacity of any colonialist entities to transform themselves into genuinely patriotic institutions. Winston Peters has done more than anyone else to impress upon us the knowledge that it is impossible to secure our liberation through the colonialist state, its parties, or political figures and that whether or not those colonialist political figures happen to be Maori is neither here nor there. Winston Peters’ style of Maori colonialism is based on a betrayal of everything decent and honorable in this country. Winston Peters’ refusal is a puzzling one, especially when New Zealand has historically positioned itself as a proponent of peace and justice. It raises questions about how we should balance our foreign policy decisions with our national values.
