Crackdown on public service leaks is leaked to RNZ
A crackdown on public servants leaking information has been revealed in an email leaked to RNZ.
RNZ has seen a copy of the email sent by a department head to staff outlining Public Service Commissioner Sir Brian Roche’s warning against leaks of information.
“He is reminding us all of our responsibility as public servants and that leaking information goes against the core values of the Public Service and must stop.
“If individuals within our employment feel strongly on issues, there are mechanisms they can use but leaking of information isn’t one of them,” the message said.
It urged staff who had concerns to take their worries to their boss, or someone they trusted.
“If you have a concern about any work you are part of, or aware of something that is causing you concerns, please talk to your manager or someone within the ministry that you feel comfortable providing you with sound advice.”
Sir Brian confirmed to RNZ he was aiming to put a stop to leaks, and in some cases public servants should be fired for doing so.
Dear Public Servants of Aotearoa New Zealand.
How are things?
I appreciate the shell shock and the anguish this Government has caused the public service.
Their sneering contempt towards the essential jobs you do are doing is an ideological cruelty of small Government DOGE Chainsaw revenge fantasies.
Let’s be 100% clear here, Luxon is so spineless and so gutless he will allow Seymour and Winston to run riot.
This is not a normal Government.
On any given weekday you have an obligation to be neutral and give advice your Ministers don’t want to hear, but what this Government represents is an extremism that must be resisted.
If you are a Public Servant, you have a duty to leak to the media.
Be careful, be smart, choose the most devastating things to leak and make sure you don’t get caught, but the only pushback against the Scumbaggery of this appalling Government is to leak, leak and leak again.
Luxon is a coward and backs off when sunlight hits his plans.
This hard right Government with its anti-Māori, anti-Treaty, anti-Trans, anti-environment, anti-worker, anti-renter, anti-disabled and anti-beneficiary agenda that strangles off the common good for their donors interests MUST BE RESISTED and we in the media can only do that if we are leaked it.
Don’t leak to ZB or NZME or The Platform or any crazy right wing media, you can’t trust them.
Leak to RNZ, John Campbell, Nicky Hagar, The Spinoff, Waatea or The Daily Blog to ensure you are dealing with people who take their journalistic privilege of defending sources seriously.
Under this appalling Government the front line is everywhere.
If you are a Public Servant, you have a duty to your democracy leak to the media!
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

Luxon telling public servants that they must support the government because they are their employers is a joke right?
So if the government tells you as a public servant to jump off a cliff would you do it?
Luxon is fucking clueless.
Public servants are required to carry out the policies of the duly elected government. It is a foundation of the democratic ideal. The idea that public servants can act directly against the government is a breach of the principle of democracy.
No-one is asking public servants to abandon their personal political views; that is inherent in their rights are citizens. What they are being asked is to carry out their legal duties as public servants.
Exactly. When you take the job as a public servant you know that that’s the deal. If you find that to hard to deal with, then find another job and stop taking the tax payers money.
The Luxon regime are enemies of the NZ people, and noone is obliged to follow any of their dictates except insofar as they choose to do so out of fear of state violence.
Perhaps Wayne you could take a look at Kohlberg’s 6 levels of moral development, and try and understand that obedience and automatic subservience to authority figures (brown nosing) is the most undeveloped form of morality usually found in very young children.
You might also want to understand what the democratic ideal actually is.
You might find the democratic ideal is recognising everyone has a voice and their perspectives are considered by the government that is accountable to the people.
An authoritarian government that ignores the populace and answer to their business donors, cannot ever result in a democratic ideal.
“Public servants are required to carry out the policies of the duly elected government”
Conversely –
“Elected governments are required to carry out the desires of the people who both employ and elect them.”
I don’t recall that mattering much to successive governments, particularly National Party ones, when it came to asset sales and many other matters. Nor do I believe fast track legislation, routine sittings under urgency and circumventing committee submissions squares with Wayne’s one way and distorted view of how obligations work.
They must leak as much as is posable because this government does not pass laws after all the informed information is looked at .They are slashing the number of people charged with doing that informing to ministers .Then they will turn around and say the minister was never informed by their ministry of the result of a shit piece of law .We are seeing this happen daily .
KEEP LEAKING TO KEEP THE VOTER INFORMED BECAUSE WE THE VOTER ARE YOUR REAL EMPLOYER NOT THE COC .
I am waiting for the old, ‘it’s a matter of national security’ or ‘you are putting lives at risk’.
Public servants work for the government, but for the people too. If the CEO of a company commits acts of sabotage or corruption against their company, an employee informing the board with be rewarded with a bloody promotion! So your government acts like this and you have to sit back and get on with your job? Not sure those were the public sector heroes under any other fascistic set up, nor worked as an excuse at Nuremberg.
Agree with contributors above.
I’ll vote for any left/centre left party that
a) dismantles the Ministry for Everything (MoBIE), whose neoliberal/3rd Way senior managerial class have been fundamentally racist at times, incompetent, control freakers, and who reward arse lickers at the lower levels, and
b) looks to create something like a Department of Civic and Citizens Affairs – taking over some of the functions held elsewhere (such as INZ, Local Gummint, FACILITATING the Electoral Commission, etc.)
Especially so in light of the Regulatory Standards Bill which is attempting to put private corporations over people and neuter democracy.
As Rat in a cage points out, it’s sensible to use a VPN. It should be noted that a lot of widely advertised VPNs like ExpressVPN don’t actually provide any real privacy.

Your best option is Mullvad VPN. Your best option for a free VPN is ProtonVPN.
For those leaking to the media, given the total surveillance that the traitor Brian Roche ( brian.roche@publicservice.govt.nz ) has ordered on government email addresses, you obviously don’t want to be doing it with your government- or for safety’s safe, with your personal email address.
Protonmail ( https://proton.me/mail ) Outlook.com and Yahoo.com should both allow signing up for a pseudonymous email. If they don’t work for you, or ask for a mobile phone number and you want to make sure that can’t be tied to you, cock.li allows you a choice of (mostly, but not all offensive) email addresses without any such phone verification.
This should be done from a personal computer not a government owned PC of course.
Given that journalists are not always particularly technically competent, and the Luxon regime is rolling out a lot of tools to spy on public servants, I would strongly recommend using software like ‘Dangerzone’ ( https://dangerzone.rocks/ ) which can take Word documents, PDFs etc, which have ‘metadata’ attached which can identify who last modified a document, who downloaded it from a SharePoint instance etc etc, and convert it to an image-based PDF which is less likely to be able to be traced. It won’t necessarily eliminate ‘watermarks’ and other ‘visual’ tracing, but those are less widely deployed within the government at present (my own sources within the GCSB will typically only send text files because the GCSB and SIS do put a variety of different watermarks in internal documents).
Very good advice. Unfortunately you never know if you are invisible or just being ignored, until jack boots kick your door down. Technology can either hide you or lead them straight to your door, and it is hard to know which.
Noted.
Please continue to self identify as left activist non neutral political partisans in the public service.
HR will be along shortly.
Overheard at MBIE.
‘Back in a moment. Just going for a leak.’
STOP HIM!
When I refused to sign the Official Secrets Act, the union rep told me I could just sign and then leak any information that was being withheld against the public interest. I chose not to take his advice, and instead resigned, which meant the loss of my Forest Service job and Forest Service accommodation in the same week. I still believe that I did the right thing. If we don’t have integrity, we have nothing.
‘Why are you upset squeaky,(sic) your(you are) a cleaner at McDonalds!’
I am puzzled – is there something wrong with being a cleaner?
Is there something wrong with working at McDonalds? After all the Prime Monster and arsehole in chief claims he worked there( only time the prick did an honest job).
Could it be that I’m right is (gasp) a snob?
Could it be that I’m right believes he, she or it is better than other people? Even those with literacy skills?
(your = belonging to you, you’re is a contraction of you are, for example; You are I’m right and your ability is minimal. Also you’re just a cunt.)
‘but youd want leaks to stop if labour were in power?’
This ‘ is a fucking apostrophe.
Youd is a Scandinavian boat.
You would, with the use of apostrophe, contracts to you’d.
EXAMPLE; Trumpet ,if you were here, I would use my arse to blow you. becomes; Trumpet if you’re here I’d use my arse to blow you.
EXAMPLE; How is Trumpet the same as the bottom half of a floating Youd? It is thick and all wet.
