In the early 70s my uncle worked at Waikeria prison as a plumber .They had a village there for the staff to live .He used to do the repairs on those houses as well as the prison its self .While he was doing those repairs he always and several inmates that he was training to become plumbers when they were released .
Uncle was also allowed to coach a rugby team that was allowed to play in the local club competition .My brother played against them at times and said they were a bit rough but never caused any concern and always returned to the prison asap after the game .My uncle was always respected by the inmates because he treated them as a person not a piece of shit .
Roll foward and my daughter now works in the sme prison and sees no effort to rehabilitate these prisoners and there is no trade training .A really good cultural program that allowed inmates to get in touch with their culture and whanau was cut because it favoured the 80% of inmates who are Maori .So now those inmates are more likely to be joining a gang because there is nothing else for them to do .She also finds the inmates respect her because she treats them as humans .Other staff donot and the inmates do not respect them .My dAUGHTER USED TO NURSE AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL AND FOUND THAT TO BE MORE DANGEROUS THAN THE PRISON FULL OF RAPISTS AND MURDERERS .tHEY WERE OFTEN ATTACKED AT NIGHT BY DRUNK AND DRUGGED PUPLIC .
