Luxon crowed about making billions in growth for NZ, the Economists rolled their eyes…
Economists challenge details of Luxon’s new growth plan
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has talked up economic growth in his big scene-setting State of the Nation speech this year.
However, four economists – two on the left and two on the right – are critical of several aspects of the strategy so far.
…the most damning indictment of Luxon’s growth mantra was from Bernard Hickey...
-
- The mathematical impossibility for the Government of restarting real per-capita GDP growth while it is also pursuing the most aggressive budget spending cuts since the early 1990s (over $60 billion in spending over the next three years) to crunch the size of Government down from 34% of GDP to under 30% of GDP;
- Luxon’s comments about going for short term growth by ramping up tourist numbers and rapidly expanding international student numbers, both of which rely on low-wage population growth, migrant exploitation and nominal GDP growth to drive activity without much investment;
- The internal contradictions in the coalition Government crippling a drive to encourage sovereign wealth funds to invest in PPPs, given the last major sovereign-wealth-fund-funded infrastructure project (the Auckland to Airport light rail link project backed by the NZ Super Fund and Quebec’s CDPQsovereign wealth fund) was blocked at the last minute by NZ First.
…only morons believe National are going t0 grow anything.
Their Austerity Agenda is to slash public service funding so you bitch and complain about the crappy service so they can promise you privatisation as the solution, and let’s be honest, most Kiwis are dumb enough to fall for it…

…National’s focus is to slash public funding, implement Privatisation by stealth and hand over sweetheart deals to their donor mates and we allowed this because the electorate were bitter post-Covid that Jacinda had the temerity to save 20 000 lives and spend money to protect public health.
The amount of corporate arse those who voted right are prepared to kiss to ‘own the libs’ is a level of self mutilation that is less about voting and more about masochism.

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

It’s not an economic growth plan, its pimping, but perhaps Jacinda is best left right out of these dialogues when so many people also disliked her agendas.
Agree GA – give her some slack for trying and achieving in an entirely unfavourable situation. And having the grace and intelligence to step down after doing her best.
The other many numbers of pollies that are fighting to stay near the gravy train (or vege equivalent) and concentrate on that entirely, should be neutered or even culled.
I got great services under the last government from public health, but I had to be very proactive.
But under the COC we are fucked they are slowly destroying everything
