Maritime Union of New Zealand holds rally at Parliament after Cook Strait mega ferries canned
- The Maritime Union of New Zealand is holding a rally at Parliament calling for publicly owned ferries.
- KiwiRail is still negotiating its exit from a $551 million contract with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard to build two mega ferries.
- The project was halted in December after costs ballooned to almost $3 billionand the Government is yet to reveal its new plan.
The Maritime Union of New Zealand is holding a rally in Wellington today, calling on the Government to invest in publicly owned and operated rail-capable ferries.
It comes as KiwiRail is still negotiating its exit from a contract to build two new mega ferries almost one year after the Government pulled the plug on the project.
Let’s be perfectly honest about why this is taking so long.
The Government are doing everything in their power to elongate the process because they intend to drop the news of just how much this fiasco has cost us as close to Christmas as possible.
That’s the real reason, once the sleepy hobbits of muddle NuZilind realise National have fucked us with this stupid decision to cancel the Ferry deal so Nicola Willis could virtue signal this Government’s new austerity, they are going to go wild!
They are going to go wild because the Government is desperately hiding the true cost of breaking the contract.
This will cost us hundreds of millions to just break the deal and when Kiwis find out how much (alongside the pathetic nothing that National are replacing this deal with) they will lose their shit because nothing annoys white people in NZ more than wasting cash and admitting the Left are right.
National are so concerned by the backlash they are gerrymandering the process so they will quietly announce the true cost of this austerity virtue signal just before Christmas in the hope the sleepy hobbits don’t notice.
It will probably work.

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

Is the government desperately trying to organize a PPP. It’s the only way out for them. Cut out Kiwi rail altogether. Effectively privitise crossing the Strait. Even if a deal seemed to have fishhooks for the Public and huge sweeteners for the Private they could still spin; a new way forward for infrastructure, long term benefits and so on and so on.
PPP’s will always end up costing the public more… Nicola Willis, Luxon , Seymore , Peters have all marketed themselves as being economic geniuses…nothing! …but nothing!!…could be further from the truth !!!…It’s all bullshit….why would they be??
Nicky No Boats hasn’t got a clue….her performance during the Finance Debate in Queenstown during the election campaign was woeful and should have set the alarm bells ringing …well …as it turned out …Forrest Gump’s mother was right ….’Stupid is as stupid does.’
Her clueless, non-analytical, knee jerk revenge brainfart, has triggered a massive waste of resources, a massive waste of highly skilled and experienced people’s time and energy and a massive massive massive waste of taxpayer’s money … with no alternative solution on the table FFS!!…sheer idiocy!!!
However, it shouldn’t really come as a surprise….It’s all part and parcel of how this pathetic excuse for a government was always going to operate.
They are failing and falling over at every turn…notice how you don’t see ‘the rights’ favourite economists Cameron Bagrie or Brad Olsen on T.V or the news anymore….hmmm…i wonder why ???
It all gets back to – are we being run by a government and a Party or are individuals within that government able to behave like an individual potentate.
I don’t understand how individuals can be blamed for something – they are under the thumb of the PM and Cabinet at least, aren’t they? Who can run for cover here – it isn’t an option surely?
Rather obvious that it was a terrible decision against the nation’s interests. National has had a life long obsession with trucks and roads, and a hatred for rail, NZ owned coastal shipping and public transport.
Look forward to more ferries drifting powerless or without steering in the treacherous waters of Cook Strait. I won’t be “cruising on the Interlslander” that’s for sure, and neither will many others. It is quite possible that another Wahine type disaster could happen in storm conditions–and it will be on Willis and Pee Wee Brown.
Spot on point.
Yeah comrade, let’s spend all the money because Labour said so. Who needs efficient spending when the brothers keep their jobs! Just tax the rich ie anyone earning more then you and me aye comrade.
clearly you think you can swim the straight with a container on your back
Clearly Comrade doesn’t think, that much is obvious. Too much money and no brains.
Comrades a moron ,,,, the Ferrys are PROFITABLE,,,,, AND they need REPLACING.
Shitting on good deals for needed replacements is being shit-house at capitalism,,,comrade moron.
NActs are very efficient at fucking things up and making things cost more for less ,,,
They are about as efficient as their leaky buildings legacy to our country….
They believe in and legislate to create tax havens and tax loopholes,,,, for the rich and corporations….. eh comrade moron
eh comrade ,,,
This is one of the reasons the skin head gang leader and no boats Willis continue to allow See nothing to spread his hate of Maori and wage war on public servants .
While every one is hating public servants and the MAAARI are taking the water the government is sinking boats and the country .Ask your self what other shit is going to happen in the next six months hence why the treaty bill is before the select committee for six months when the bill to sink the ferries never went before any select committee as was also the case to repeal the now very cheap three waters .
Middle NZ is quite thick really .
An interesting article in the Herald this morning basically stating what a useless minister of finance we have and in general a useless government .A refreshing read acknowledging what most of us have already known for months. Hence Barbara Edmonds quietly chipping away around the country and in parliament at Willis et.al who has no answers just condescension because in reality she doesn’t know what she’s talking about
Very true NMG,
Another interesting article today about a letter sent by independent economists to Luxon and Willis telling them their policies are making our recession worse.
Basically saying that not only is Willis missing in action but when she does surface she makes things worse.
As an aside where is Benson and Hedges Bishop. No drivel from him since he basically canned Dunedin Hospital.
Is he on the wrecking ball knocking down a few Kaianga Ora houses.
I noticed Simple Brown is acting leader of the house.
No point having these ferries unless you stump up the additional billions to build the necessary infrastructure they require. There will always be a penalty to cancel a contract, but it won’t be billions.
Govt can’t disclose whatever the penalty might be until it’s settled, however long that takes.
So far seems like typical commercial negotiations. But no reason a parallel search can’t be happening for a different solution, which also couldn’t be disclosed until finalized.
NZ needs better ferries, but at a cost the country can afford. We could have had a world class shipbuilding industry in NZ and done it ourselves, but that’s another story.
So instead of stumping up with a penalty follow through with the originals and invest in the infrastructure required. ITS NOT THAT FUCKING HARD TONY! The cost is repaid in tourists, N Z residents and transport business!!!
3 billion will turn out to be a bargain .Remember she has already tipped 500 million into the straight add to that another 500 million to cancel the deal then payment for work already done and we are at 1.5 billion .New boats will be a billion each so now we are past 3 billion .
NZ had negotiated ferries at a price we could afford. From here on it’s a shitshow.
Yes it seemed an unbelievabley stupid thing to arbitrarily cancel the ferry deal without anything to replace it with. It was obviously virtue signalling and I am sure I am not the only one who thought it was dumb as fuck thing to do. They were on a mission to undermine Kiwi rail yes, they want to replace it with some PPP bullshit, probably with the support Chippy dipshit.
Yes, your right Nicola is way out of her league she does not have any qualifications in this field, and she has been rather quiet because she has made such a fucken mess of our economy. Our government debt has increased under her and her and Luxon have created the conditions for housing to be a more lucrative investment and this requires more borrowing and more personal debt being taken on. In the meantime, she is relying too much on interest rates dropping so NZers with mortgages will spend but they can’t and won’t spend if their jobs are at risk, there is too much uncertainty and it’s not good.
The focus on Government debt is way wide of the mark .Government debt is a drop in the ocean compared to private debt which is what is really sinking the economy .Private debt is about $5.4 billion so imagine how much interest we are paying on that at 6%
Look there’s nothing wrong with our government carrying more debt if it has benefitted our country but the money given to landlords what was the benefit as I can’t see one. And all those dumb SMEs who voted for the current lot thinking they are better managers of the economy I can’t see the benefits either, but I can see many businesses are going to the wall and many people leaving.
If she sits there much longer the legs will snap because her arse will be twice the size
I see Winston said today that they will be making an announcement on december 11 .The PM must be missing in action again so he has passed the batten .The other reason he has done so is because it will not be good news so he will get Winston to take the blame .
Luxon has gone to batten down the hatches I think. The wisdom of the wily.
I have had to delay further transactions re the ferry while I get my hair and makeup redesigned by my grooming coach – these images go world-wide and I must look my best. Look what they did with Paula Bennett and Jacinda as well. It looks as if I could be Prime Minister in an appreciably short time and catch up with Iceland and Finland.
