Gaza Strip

Attacks: There are no safe places for the militarily-dominated population in Gaza, who find themselves subjected to airstrikes and other missile attacks on buildings, homes and many essentialfacilities, as well as constant gunfire and invasions by Israeli forces. The Israeli Navy continues to fire missiles, targeting facilities and buildings along the entire Gaza shoreline.

Victims: 28 more people have been killed within the past 48 hours, bringing the total number killed in Gaza, since 7 October, to at least 43,764. Another 120 have been wounded, bringing that total to 103,490. The daily average number of men, women and children killed in Gaza is at least 108 and, of those injured, that is now more than 255.

Gravest Crimes’ – UN Condemns Dehumanisation of Gaza Civilians

The United Nations Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Co-ordinator, Joyce Msuya, underlined the devastating humanitarian situation in Gaza saying that “we are witnessing acts reminiscent of the gravest international crimes.” “Essential commercial goods and services including electricity have been all but cut off. This has led to increasing hunger, starvation, and now, as we have heard, potentially famine,” Msuya said, speaking at a Security Council session on Palestine on Tuesday. The UN official criticised the international community for contenting with statements of condemnations void of any tangible actions to stop the genocide in Gaza. “We have condemned the death, destruction, and dehumanisation of civilians in Gaza who have been driven from their homes, stripped of their sense of place and dignity, forced to witness their family members killed, burned, and buried alive,” Msuya said while noting that this was her 16th briefing to the Security Council since the start of the war on Gaza.

The acting under-secretary accentuated the horrific situation that the children of Gaza have been subjected to since the genocidal war started on October 7 of last year. “Injured children have had the words ‘Wounded Child, No Surviving Family,’ penned on their arms,” Msuya told member states. She went on to say that most of the besieged Strip has been turned into “a wasteland of rubble” after a year of a relentless genocidal war launched by Israel last year. “What distinction was made, and what precautions were taken, if more than 70 percent of civilian housing is either damaged or destroyed?” Msuya questioned.

Rashida Tlaib calls on Blinken to resign, slams Biden administration on Gaza aid

The only Palestinian American member of Congress has called on US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to resign for saying that Israel was not blocking aid into the Gaza Strip in a new assessment.

“Palestinian children are forced to eat pet food and bug-infested flour,” she said, adding that the Blinken “says there’s no need to change our own policy”. “The Biden administration is refusing to comply with US law,” she said.

New Israeli ‘flour massacre’ targets dozens of starving people north of Gaza City

In a new ‘flour massacre’, the Israeli occupation army has killed dozens of Palestinians who were gathering in the Sudanese roundabout area, north-west of Gaza City. The victims were waiting for the arrival of humanitarian aid after roughly 50 consecutive days of a complete denial of aid. Israeli army forces opened fire on dozens of Palestinian civilians waiting for aid trucks on the sea road north-west of Gaza City on Wednesday 13 November at around 10:00 am. The Israeli forces killed and injured dozens of them when they attempted to seek refuge inside a nearby house, and then bombed the building, destroying it. Many more individuals are now missing and presumably trapped beneath the debris.

According to an eyewitness, the Israeli army targeted a group of civilians who had been enduring weeks of famine as a result of the occupation army blocking the entry of food and aid supplies into the Gaza City and North Gaza. When they went to get flour, the army opened fire on them with shells and bullets, forcing them to take cover in a two-storey residential house nearby. As soon as they reached the building, the Israeli army bombed it. Screams from those still inside the targeted house were heard, but the victims’ cries for help could not be answered, as the area was inaccessible to ambulance and civil defence personnel. Initial reports indicate that there were around 200 people gathered in the area at the time of the attack, 70 of whom were killed and injured.

As Israel insists on using starvation as weapon, famine in northern Gaza must be officially declared

Given that Israel has blocked the entry of goods and aid to the hundreds of thousands of besieged residents in the northern Gaza Strip for more than 50 days now, the relevant international and UN organisations must formally declare famine in the region. Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon is one component of its ongoing genocide in the Strip, which also includes mass killings and forced displacement. Due to the illegal Israeli blockade on the enclave, 10s of thousands of Palestinians, including dozens of patients in three hospitals in the northern Gaza Strip, are in immediate danger of starvation or long-term health consequences. Israel has been blocking the flow of any humanitarian aid into northern Gaza since 25 September. By blocking the entry of all goods, beginning on 1 October, and launching a massive military assault against all citizens of Jabalia and Beit Lahia four days later, Israel has successfully divided the North Gaza Governorate from the rest of the Gaza Strip.

The Euro-Med Monitor field team has documented shocking testimonies from Palestinians forced to leave the northern Gaza Strip regarding the intense hunger and scarcity of food there. The team cautions that this foretells a rise in the prevalence and spread of hunger, severe malnutrition, and related illnesses, particularly among the elderly, children, and expectant mothers. Palestinians have not recovered from earlier waves of starvation that appeared at different times at the end of last year and multiple times in the preceding months, and they are currently facing the worst of Israel’s starvation, bombing, and displacement campaigns.

UN committee says Israel’s actions ‘consistent with characteristics of genocide’

Report recommends Israeli officials be held accountable and UN member states halt offensive arms transfers to Israel. A report by a United Nations special committee has accused Israel of using starvation as a weapon of war and policies and practices in Gaza that may amount to a “possibility of genocide”. The special committee comprised three member states – Malaysia, Senegal and Sri Lanka. The report, released amid ongoing scrutiny of Israel’s military response to the October 7 Hamas attack, highlights the difficult conditions facing Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, particularly in terms of restricted access to food, water, medical care and shelter.

“The policies and practices of Israel during the reporting period are consistent with the characteristics of genocide,” the report states, urging immediate steps to be taken to protect civilian lives.
The special committee also concluded that Israel is committing several violations of international law, and not just in Gaza. “Civilians have been indiscriminately and disproportionally killed en masse in Gaza, while in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, Israeli colonial settlers, military and security personnel have continued to violate human rights and humanitarian law with impunity,” its report said. The committee added that Israeli government and military officials must be held accountable, including for using dehumanising language and inciting violence.

Israel carrying out war crimes, ethnic cleansing in Gaza, HRW says

Israel’s forced displacement of Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023 amounts to war crimes and crimes against humanity, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a report on Thursday. The rights group said Israel has displaced around 1.9 million Palestinians – nearly all of the enclave’s population – without justification. HRW’s 154-page report examines Israel’s “evacuation” system, which it says has been inconsistent and accompanied by the deliberate targeting of civilians. “The Israeli government cannot claim to be keeping Palestinians safe when it kills them along escape routes, bombs so-called safe zones, and cuts off food, water, and sanitation,” said Nadia Hardman, refugee and migrant rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. “Israel has blatantly violated its obligation to ensure Palestinians can return home, razing virtually everything in large areas.”

UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese calls David Lammy a ‘genocide denier’

The United Nations special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories has accused British Foreign Secretary David Lammy of being a “genocide denier” and said the UK has done “nothing” to prevent atrocities in Gaza. In an interview with Middle East Eye in London on Wednesday, Francesca Albanese took aim at Lammy in response to comments he made in late October denying that Israel is committing genocide. “I hadn’t realised that Mr Lammy was a lawyer,” she said, referring to Lammy’s legal background. “As a politician, you might say that for political convenience,” she suggested, adding that would still make someone “a genocide denier”. However, she saw such remarks from someone familiar with law surprising. “Because excuse me? What are you saying?”

Albandese told MEE: “He’s referring to cases where genocide has resulted in industrial scale of killing, of mass extermination, like in Rwanda and during the Holocaust. “But it’s not the numbers of those killed that determines whether or not there is genocide, and any lawyer would know that.” “But by doing so, he’s denying that genocide occurred in the case of Australia or Canada or the United States, where the genocide was carried out primarily not through mass killing but through cutting the bloodline of the Aboriginals so that they could disappear in the white European coloniser’s society.”

Israel demolishes last mosque in Bedouin village in Negev desert

Israeli authorities this morning stormed the Bedouin village of Umm Al-Hiran in the Negev desert in southern Israel, demolishing its mosque, the village’s last remaining structure, following the prior destruction of residents’ homes. The Bedouin residents of Umm Al-Hiran, Ras Jaraba, and ten other villages nearby face imminent displacement, as Israeli authorities plan to establish new Jewish towns on the sites of these Arab villages. Moreover, Israeli authorities ordered the residents of Umm Al-Hiran to evacuate by 24 November to make way for a new Jewish town, Dror, to be built on its ruins. Ras Jaraba, under the same plan, will become a neighbourhood within Dimona’s jurisdiction. Requests from residents of both villages to be included in the new developments were rejected, with authorities demanding an immediate evacuation of Umm Al-Hiran for the establishment of a Jewish-only town.

At least 15 people killed in Israeli strikes on Syria’s Damascus

At least 15 people have been killed in Israeli strikes on residential buildings in Damascus, Syrian state media reported. “The Israeli enemy launched an air aggression from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan [Heights], targeting residential buildings in the Mazzeh neighbourhood of Damascus and the Qudssaya area in the Damascus countryside, killing 15 people and injuring 16 others,” the ministry said on Thursday, adding that the death toll could rise.

A look at five pro-Israel organisations that lost charitable status in Canada, and the mega-donors who funded them

The recent status revocations of the Jewish National Fund of Canada Inc (JNFC) and Ne’eman Foundation Canada suggest that the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has blinked first in the face of the International Court of Justice’s July 19, 2024, advisory opinion on the Legal Consequences arising from the Policies and Practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem. The two former charities had been involved for years – the JNFC, notably, since 1967 – in transferring Canadian taxpayer-subsidized charitable donations into the hands of Israeli intermediaries involved in undermining the territorial sovereignty of Palestine, specifically in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Extricating the Canadian charitable sector from its ongoing complicity with Israeli war crimes is, however, not a ‘one and done’ affair. Worth on average close to $280 million CDN per year in charitable donations (2018-2022), Israel is consistently the top, yearly, international recipient of Canadian benevolence. Canadian charity guru, Mark Blumberg, suggests that Canadian Jewish community-related charities are sitting on about $9.2 billion CDN in assets (2022), with upper echelon Jewish public and private foundations holding another $5 billion CDN. In perspective, stymieing the internationally illegal operations of the JNFC and Ne’eman Canada, while meaningful, is but a drop in the proverbial bucket . . .

Dutch Photographer Reveals How the Media ‘Changed the Whole Narrative’ On Israeli Hooligan

When chaos erupted in Amsterdam between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax fans, photographer Annet de Graaf watched the violence unfold across the city first-hand. Her footage of Maccabi fans attacking a Dutch resident went viral, and was picked up by several media outlets, who then spun a different narrative that it was the Israelis being attacked.

Headlines poured in about antisemitic attacks in Amsterdam. But these stories largely overlooked on-camera, blatant, anti-Arab racism from Maccabi supporters. In an exclusive interview, de Graaf tells Mehdi that outlets like CNN, BBC World News, and the New York Times “told the opposite of what happened in that footage.” She adds that they erased the responsibility of the Maccabi fans behind the attacks because “the truth is inconvenient.”
