Sport and Recreation Minister Chris Bishop has asked Sport NZ to review and update its Guiding Principles for the Inclusion of Transgender People in Community Sport.
Advocacy group InsideOut meanwhile maintains that any review involve the trans community itself, and not be used as a disguise to exclude vulnerable communities for non-sporting reasons.
Bishop said he believed the guidelines do not reflect expectations that sport be about fairness and safety as well as diversity, inclusion and equity.
“The National-New Zealand First Coalition Agreement commits the Government to ensuring publicly funded sporting bodies support fair competition that is not compromised by rules relating to gender.
This is bullshit.
This is NZF culture war spite masquerading as social policy.
We are not talking about professional sporting bodies here, they have already found their own standards to work with, we are talking about cutting local sports funding if they have a Trans player!
One of the great values of sport is participation, threatening public funding if you have a trans player in your amateur sports team is ugly, cruel and malicious.
Look, you can, (as I sure as hell have been), very critical of the way the Trans community and their fourth wave feminist allies and non binary activists have gone about pushing their cause in a counterproductive and radioactive manner.
Their woke dogma has caused enormous damage on the left, however – Trans people are people and deserve all the agency that a liberal progressive democracy promises. Cutting off public funding to Community Sports groups if they have a trans player is erasure, and that is taking us to a pretty dark place.
Unfortunately all the woke have managed to do is generate ill feeling with their their radioactive trans debate so that when the State moves against Trans people, there is no one willing to stand up for their rights.
Well I am.
You can’t just cut public funding to Sports Groups because they have a trans player.
That’s not who we are, and it is not something we should aspire to be.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

I’m afraid the image of weightlifter Laurel Hubbard comes to mind: broad male shoulders, strong male build. Almost like a deliberate middle finger to women weightlifters.
“This is NZF culture war spite masquerading as social policy.”
But isn’t the trans sports thing also just culture war masquerading as social policy from the left?
My impression is the left is too emotionally fragile to handle some pushback.
I can’t recall sports ever being political topic until queerphobes realized they could use it against the trans community, I would love to get back to talking about economic issues but I’m not going to lay down when me and my loved ones are under attack
Only women should be permitted to play in womens sport teams. Definitely no men.
If a huge trans turned up at the local team and was purposely trying to crunch people I bet they’d be told to move on regardless of gender. If the permissive club didn’t protect it’s participants from deliberate harm, it’d close. No need for government to intervene. They like to tell us they don’t step in to save businesses.
I’d like to review my position. I think the government should cut funding to publicly funded sports across the board effective immediately. Please National, please stop funding everything you don’t like, the more irrational the better, especially those activities run and enjoyed by your voting base.
Nathan & Winston have got this one right.
Marco+Battler “ Nathan &Winston have got this one right.” 100%.
It’s only in the last few decades that women have won the right to play competitive sports and only in the last few years that funding for womens sports has started catching up with men’s. Now that women’s sport’s are finally becoming an attractive proposition a few men want to push their way in there. They should be told to fuck off.
