Darleen Tana drama could end in a month, following Green conference
A decision on whether to use waka-jumping rule to eject former Green, now independent, MP Darleen Tana from Parliament could come in a month’s time, following a discussion between the party and its members in Christchurch on Saturday afternoon.
The Greens were open about the fact the party would discuss what to do about Tana at their AGM in Christchurch this afternoon. One option, the Herald understands, is to schedule a Special General Meeting in a month’s time at which party delegates will discuss what to do.
A motion to use the waka-jumping legislation to eject Tana would require consensus among delegates or a 75% majority to succeed.
Tana was not the only thing on the agenda. New Green co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick challenged her members to help deliver on her campaign promise to grow the party into the dominant force on the left of New Zealand politics.
This AGM is Swarbrick’s first as co-leader, and one which she led alone after co-leader Marama Davidson took leave to battle cancer, Swarbrick challenged members to “look at ourselves in the mirror and consider whether we want to evolve as a Party”.
Chloe is clearly challenging the Greens on some of the things they hold important vs the need to make radical and immediate change to combat climate change and deep social inequality.
We are in Late Stage Capitalism on a planet melting far faster than many had feared.
The leading environmental Party should be dominating the news headlines on the climate, instead we are stuck dealing with the Tana drama!
The argument against using the Waka Jumping legislation is righteous and pure.
No Party should punish an elected representative who has quit the Party our been forced out on a matter of principle by dumping them altogether from Parliament and if Tana was an electorate MP or had quit on a matter of principle it would be an appalling power to invoke, but Tana is a Party MP and has been forced out because of a damning investigation into allegations of migrant worker exploitation by her partner, that is completely different to quitting on a matter of conscience!
The longer the Tana Drama continues, the weaker the Greens look.
Chloe has asked the Party to be trusted with this power, they should accept because Chloe is probably the best politician of her generation and is the best bet we have to forcing legislation that will respond to the challenges we have.
The planet is melting and the Greens need to be leading that debate, while Tana is there, they cant do that.

Imaging the Greens in charge of the country. We would be soon have thousands if public servants tied up in meetings and reports .Thousands of trees will die so reports can be printed covering every aspect of moving forward. as the country ground to a halt as we would have to stop doing many things to save the planet.
Well it would most certainly be better than the corruption we are getting from this coalition of chaos the worse this country has ever seen, clearly you haven’t been around long enough but hey keep protecting Uffindell.
I have been here since 1973 half of that time I was self employed so know how a business can be effect by a bad government. I voted against Muldoon and for Clark on her first 2 terms and obviously against Labour in 23
The Greens are poor defenders of the environment. They are good at pronouns and wordy speeches while the planet burns. Blaming National for being no better is not a great argument.
Image that you can spell, *and* make a factual comment. I’m trying hard to imaging that. If you don’t know what you are talking about, the option to remain silent should be more attractive than it seems to be. Trolling is all you’re doing really.
How a MP elected to parliament solely on a Party List can even remain till the end of the week once they’ve either left or been thrown out of that party? Surely the term Independent List M.P is a oxymoron.
I think the greenies enacting the Waka jumping legislation would display the testicular fortitude and pragmatism many think they lack. And help show they do in fact live in the real world. Or at least the 2024 version of this Clown show.
How can Darlene Tana think she is in parliament representing anybody but herself? The rest of us don’t have our own personal representation, why should she?
Yes, the Greens need a long hard look in the mirror. They have just about everything covered as far as sexual orientation is concerned but they aren’t called the Sexual Identity Party.
They desperately need to get back to being the Green Party proper, not just when they have time, after pushing sexual identity barrow.
The environment is what they were elected to promote. Their secondary mission is social justice.
So can they please forget about sex and race for awhile and do what they were primarily elected to do instead of mucking around like a bunch of moody teenagers.
The greens need to dump their co leader bull shit and give Chloe sole charge and let her clean this shit up .
Tana is just free loading so should be kicked to the curb as Jacinda did with Sharma who has just gone down the nearest rabbit hole never to be seen again .
Chloe stop the bull shit and get these people in behind you and take the party foward
Yes and just as Luxon kicked Uffindell to touch…oh wait?
You need to move on from Uffindel. No one cares but you.
Agree.
A few of us do care because we see him as a good example of who not to nominate as a political candidate. It’s wise to remember these messy episodes and the selection people should be remembering them too.
So, not a question of ‘moving on’ but more a question of not repeating our mistakes.
I read that Chloe said they might have Dharleen sorted by…September… which means it will be pretty much a full year since the election before she goes. My first ever vote was for the Green party— now I wouldn’t touch them with a 40 foot non-binary-tiriti-centered-korowai-granny-bashing-at Albert-Park barge-pole.
Your are SO right Bomber…but instead of rallying around a skilled leader and the political base that effectively landed the Greens the largest number of seats in the party’s history at the last election….the factional nonsense of identity rears it’s ugly head and threatens to pull the Party apart.

The likes of Tana and Kerekere are undermining this country for their own personal virtue signaling.
Chloe would have done better to join the Labour party and deal with it’s factional bullshit, just as Peter Garret did in Australia.
At least he stepped up and eventually became the Environment Minister.
Chloe I fear is a political leader this country needs but will be lost to history because she aligned herself to a tardy bunch of sanctimonious navel gazing narcissists.
The Greens need to grow up
